There was a stage in life when I understood that not everything needs to be told. There was a time when, experiencing a joy or a moment of excitement, I would open my heart and share it with others, thinking quite naturally that they would genuinely be happy for me. However, I realized that this rarely happened.

People might want to see us happy, but not happier than them; successful, but not more successful than them. As the popular saying goes: "Faces we see, hearts we never know". They might show emotion, applaud, and celebrate, but deep down, something about it makes them uncomfortable. That is when silence becomes a trench—a sacred space that protects what is fragile and deserves to mature without interference.

There are those who feel an urgent need to be close, to know more. In some cases, they cannot control the envy that other people's success produces in them, and they express it openly.

I remember once, when I was going to marry my beloved Finnish man—may he rest in peace—one of my best friends came to visit me. We had been friends for about ten or fifteen years, and she came to ask how things were going between us. I told her that we were getting married and moving to live in Houston, since his contract in Venezuela was about to end and he had to return to Texas. Her face turned pale and she said with a vehemence that frightened me:

"You're going to marry a rich guy and move to Houston, and I don't even have a roof over my head with my husband! I am so envious, I am so jealous!".

Then, strange as it may seem, things started to go wrong or get delayed—everything we had planned. We didn’t get married because a number of obstacles arose that forced us to postpone the wedding date, until the moment came when he had to leave. He left with the promise to return soon, while I got my documents and everything else I needed for the trip in order. And since our plans don’t always align with God’s, my fiancé suffered a workplace accident that took his life, leaving me alone, with my heart in pieces.

Since then, I’ve chosen to stay silent, to not share what was happening to me. It’s not about being secretive, but about recognizing the weight of other people’s opinions and the power of thoughts. When we share our most intimate plans, we lay bare projects that are barely taking shape before a landscape that doesn’t always know how to support them. There are those who voice their opinions amid the noise, and others who, with a sneer or a subtle comment, try to dim the brilliance of what we’re building.

Over time, I’ve learned to be more selective. Intense experiences and tough trials have reaffirmed one certainty for me: there are joys best savored in silence and goals that grow stronger when nurtured in private. There’s no need to account for every step to the outside world or seek validation in widespread applause. True magnetism lies in knowing what we’re building and keeping it safe, understanding that what is built in peace flourishes with much deeper roots.
