NEVER LOSE FOCUS

I applied for my master’s degree in science in environmental toxicology & pollution management from the University of Lagos, Nigeria for the second time in two consecutive years and i was really hopeful I would get in this time. For Nigerians you all can agree with me that getting any form of admission into Unilag can be likened to a camel passing through the eye of a needle, Yea!!! It is almost impossible as you have a hundred thousand and one applicants showing up, very few admission slots available.
At the time, I was working with a mortgage firm as a sales executive (totally unrelated to my chosen career path) rolls eyes how I got into sales and marketing bank’s product is a story for another day. I submitted my duly completed forms to the designated places, studied hard for the qualifying examinations, sat for the exam and few weeks later I was waiting for my good news.
I went out with boboo and on our way back into the night, we had one of our uncool awkward moments, we both sat quietly in the car on our way back from his new apartment, he stopped by at his old place and while I waited in the car to sit the awkwardness out, I received a call from my fellow applicants informing me that the merit admission list has been pasted on the school’s postgraduate web-page. Tension sweat beads broke through my skin as I loaded the web-page and I kid you not, in that moment, I was very anxious, skimming through the list while looking for any name similar to mine. I found it, yes I found my name resting delicately in between no7 and no9, my joy knew no bounds as I became the 8th candidate on the merit admission list. Of course! The awkwardness between boboo and I became history as we both found another reason to celebrate, we had achieved another milestone towards living our dreams.
Lessons learnt;
• Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.
• Be tenacious
• What is yours will definitely be yours.
