It's been a good bit since I've been able to post one of these but the plan is to post them regularly 2 or 3 times a week. Today's post was supposed to be on Friday with but all the issues the block chain was having I wanted to wait until things got more stable before I started posting regularly again. So without further adieu let's get to it.
If you like loud and fast rock music then I've got you covered today. Today I'm doing "On A Plain" from Nirvana's landmark album "Nevermind." It's the second to the last track on the album. I bought this album when it was originally released though I got it on cassette( cassettes used to be a thing). I originally had gotten the album for the song "Come As You Are" I liked the song and thought it had a different sound to it, plus the video was cool. On the original listen to two songs that stood out to me were In Bloom and On A Plain. Now in the time since then my favorites have changed about as often as socks the fact it to me pretty much every song on that release is great. With the great use of melody those two for some reason gave me a retro vibe and I just really liked them.
On A Plain is performed in "Drop D" tuning which was very popular in grunge music at the time. Before grunge honestly the only time I ever heard of Drop D tuning is when Ratt used it on Lay It Down. If you don't know what Drop D tuning is it's when you tune the low E strong down to D and the rest of the strings are left in standard tuning so the tuning would be DADGBE. Outside of that as far as chords you are looking at just basic power chords.
I'd learned this song years ago so I really thought this was going to be a quick one going into it. I got my cd and put it into the player and got my guitar and amp ready and started playing along. I tend to practice these a few times before I do the actual recording. Well to my surprise I sounded like crap. With the other songs I'd been doing the past few weeks my strumming wasn't up to speed. The song a much higher tempo than I'd remembered and had much more energy. On top of that originally I'd learned one of the chords wrong. So I got the correct chords figured out and relearned it then had to play through it a few times to get the tempo under my hands and get my right hand back to the correct speed. Another special issue with this song is that there is no intro. It just starts so you got to really be on it to hit your queue and start the song off right. It's a really fun song to play and it's the type of song I used to play in bands when I was younger. Remember in a lot of these videos the actual video tends to lag behind the sound and this one is no different, but the sound is just fine.
