Tunde has always loved Esther ever since he saw her in high school. Her beauty had captured him the very moment he saw her and he had vowed to make her his no matter what. He had done literally every thing possible in other to make Esther say yes to him, all to no avail.
“It's obvious she doesn't want you, why don't you just let her be.” Tunde's best friend, Jenny had advised him countless times but he just wouldn't listen. She just couldn't get what Tunde saw in Esther that he couldn't see in someone else, in her. She had tried to make him see how she felt towards him but Tunde's love for Esther had blinded him so badly that he saw no one else but her.
The school prom was around the corner and Tunde had made plans to ask Esther to be his prom date. He knew she was going to turn him down but maybe, just maybe if he was creative enough with the way he ask her, then maybe she might agree to be his date. So he went ahead and made his plan. Esther was part of the drama group in school and they had this event coming up in a few days at the schools theater before prom, that was where he was going to ask her to be his prom date.
And even though Jenny tried to talk Tunde out of the whole plan because she knew it was going to end disastrously and Tunde would end up being a laughing stock in the school, he still went ahead with the plan.
The day was finally here, Tunde was standing nervously behind the curtain waiting patiently for his cue to come out and pop the question. He was beginning to sweat, a part of him asked him to listen to Jenny and just leave but he had put in so much work in this for him to just back down. Then he saw it, his cue.
So he walked out of the curtain, everyone was surprised, everyone except for Jenny who was nervous as well. She had her finger crossed, hoping and praying that everything goes as planned. In as much as she wanted Tunde for herself, she didn't want her best friend to be embarrassed in front of this whole crowd.
“I know you've probably heard this like a million times from me but I've always loved you right from the moment I saw you Esther. I'm in love with you and would it if you did me the honors of being my date to the school prom” Tunde said, all in one breath and then there were silence.
Esther's face looked like she was surprised then it started changing into something else, something Tunde knew brought nothing but doom with it.
“What's this? You want me to be your date? You don't deserve me, I'd rather go to prom with an homeless man than with you” Esther lashed out while some of the students laughed.
Tunde bowed his head in shame and was about walking out when he heard a voice far to familiar for him not to know who if was.
“How much more heartless can you be? He has done literally everything to make you know how he feels about you, he even went as far as planning this whole thing just to ask you to be his date to prom. Do you know how many people would kill to have what you're throwing away?? You're right, you don't deserve him. He's way too good for you” Jenny fired back at Esther before angrily storming out.
Everyone was shocked by her outburst. The theater became as silent as a graveyard, Esther's was speechless while Tunde felt like he was dreaming. "He had never seen Jenny that upset before and to think she just defended him right in front of everyone, and what was that she said about people being lucky to have him in their lives"
Then it started coming to him "Could it be that she.. No no no what have I done? All this while I've been going after the one I love while neglecting the one that loves me" Tunde thought to himself as he immediately started moving towards the exit.
"And where do you think you're going?" Esther asked as she saw him walking away..
“I'm going after my date” was all Tunde said before running after Jenny.
