Last night, some time around 10pm, I could hear a couple of people living in the building right next to mine as they sang and prayed until about 12am that night.
Thankfully, their voices were beautiful, and I even found myself dancing and singing along to some praises and worship songs that they sang. But when I later went to bed, I couldn't help but ask myself one question, one question that I feel would be on the mind of a lot of people who overheard those songs and prayers that night, especially their neighbors.
In as much as I enjoyed the songs of praise that they sang that night, shouldn't what they're doing be considered as noise pollution, and should everyone else look away or try to ignore it, simply because it has to do with religion?
Now I have nothing against religion; I happen to be a Christian myself, but I ask this because last night you could tell these people didn't care about how loud they were. You could hear them from two, three buildings away; it was almost as if they all had this mentality that just because they're doing it for God, or to God, then they've got all the permission that they need.
But that isn't really true, is it? I do think that if this wasn't Africa, where everyone has so much been brainwashed with too much religion, if this was a more civilized country, the police would have been called on those people, and they would have asked them to reduce their voices.
Unfortunately, if you do that over here, you will be branded as a devil who is trying to stop the lord's people from worshipping and praying to him.
Besides, it's not like you have to raise your voice to the highest of volumes for you to get heard by God. And also, what about those people who believe in other religions and want some peace and quiet for the night? Isn't it a bit selfish of you to disturb their evening rest just because you feel that you have to raise your voice through the roof to pray?
