The next stop on our Spain trip was Oceanogràfic, the huge oceanarium tucked into the old riverbed park of the City of Arts and Sciences. Opened in 2003 and designed by the architect Félix Candela, it is the largest aquarium complex in Europe, home to around 45,000 animals from some 500 species, and we spent an entire day wandering between its shell shaped buildings.

A paragem seguinte da nossa viagem por Espanha foi o Oceanogràfic, o enorme oceanário instalado no antigo leito do rio, dentro da Cidade das Artes e das Ciências. Inaugurado em 2003 e desenhado pelo arquiteto Félix Candela, é o maior complexo de aquários da Europa, com cerca de 45.000 animais de perto de 500 espécies, e passámos lá um dia inteiro a percorrer os seus edifícios em forma de concha.
Our first proper view of the park came across the lagoon, with reeds and palms framing the famous Access Building. Its curved white shell, often compared to a giant water lily leaf, was one of the last great works of Félix Candela's long career.

A nossa primeira vista a sério do parque foi do outro lado do lago, com juncos e palmeiras a emoldurar o famoso Edifício de Acesso. A sua concha branca e curva, muitas vezes comparada a uma folha gigante de nenúfar, foi uma das últimas grandes obras da longa carreira de Félix Candela.
Under a cloudier sky, another of the park's striking shell shaped rooftops appeared above the marshy foreground, with the tall white pylon of the City of Arts and Sciences' cable stayed bridge rising in the distance, tying Oceanogràfic to the rest of the complex.

Sob um céu mais nublado, surgiu outro dos impressionantes telhados em forma de concha do parque, por cima da vegetação pantanosa em primeiro plano, com o pilar branco da ponte pênsil da Cidade das Artes e das Ciências a erguer se ao fundo, ligando o Oceanogràfic ao resto do complexo.
Right at the entrance, the park map laid out the ten themed zones waiting for us: the Mediterranean, Wetlands, Temperate and Tropical Seas, the Red Sea, the Arctic, the Antarctic, Islands, Oceans and the Dolphinarium, spread across 110,000 square meters. We took a photo of it before setting off, knowing we would need it later.

Mesmo à entrada, o mapa do parque mostrava as dez zonas temáticas que nos esperavam: o Mediterrâneo, as Zonas Húmidas, os Mares Temperados e Tropicais, o Mar Vermelho, o Ártico, a Antártida, as Ilhas, os Oceanos e o Delfinário, distribuídos por 110.000 metros quadrados. Tirámos uma foto antes de arrancar, sabendo que iríamos precisar dela mais tarde.
Our first real underwater moment came inside the Oceans building, part of the huge main tank connected to the park's famous 70 meter underwater tunnel. A shark glided calmly overhead while smaller fish darted around it, all lit in that deep blue that seems to belong only to aquariums.

O nosso primeiro momento a sério debaixo de água foi dentro do edifício dos Oceanos, parte do enorme tanque principal ligado ao famoso túnel subaquático de 70 metros do parque. Um tubarão deslizava calmamente por cima de nós enquanto peixes mais pequenos se moviam à sua volta, tudo banhado naquele azul profundo que parece pertencer só aos aquários.
A moment later the same shark turned and swam almost straight toward the glass, giving us a close look at its size and the smooth power of its movement. It is one of those sights that makes you take a small step back even though you know the glass is doing its job.

Momentos depois, o mesmo tubarão virou se e nadou quase direito ao vidro, dando nos uma vista de perto do seu tamanho e da força suave do seu movimento. É um daqueles momentos que nos faz dar um passo atrás mesmo sabendo que o vidro está a fazer o seu trabalho.
From a little further back we caught another shark silhouetted against the shimmering surface, with two smaller fish trailing below it. The play of light on the water above made the whole tank feel like a window into the open ocean rather than a building in the middle of a park.

Um pouco mais atrás, apanhámos outro tubarão em silhueta contra a superfície cintilante, com dois peixes mais pequenos a seguir lo por baixo. O jogo de luz na água lá em cima fazia o tanque parecer uma janela para o oceano aberto, e não um edifício no meio de um parque.
Back outside, the geodesic dome of the Arctic and Antarctic pavilion rose up behind a cluster of boulders and a shallow pond, where a few wild birds had settled in among the rocks, quite happy to share the scenery with the visitors walking by.

Já lá fora, a cúpula geodésica do pavilhão do Ártico e da Antártida erguia se atrás de um grupo de rochas e de uma lagoa pouco funda, onde algumas aves selvagens se tinham instalado entre as pedras, bastante satisfeitas por partilhar a paisagem com os visitantes que passavam.
Inside the Northern Seas hall, a life size shark model hung above a whale skeleton, with a sign explaining that this particular species, native to the cold Arctic waters, can live up to 400 years, making it one of the longest living vertebrates known.

Dentro da sala dos Mares do Norte, um modelo de tubarão em tamanho real pendia sobre o esqueleto de uma baleia, com um painel a explicar que esta espécie em particular, natural das águas frias do Ártico, pode viver até 400 anos, tornando a num dos vertebrados mais longevos conhecidos.
A few steps further, a huge iceberg replica towered over the walkway inside the Arctic dome, its rough white surface lit from below in cold blues and purples while visitors circled around it, looking genuinely small next to something meant to feel like the Arctic itself.

Mais alguns passos e um enorme icebergue de imitação erguia se sobre o percurso dentro da cúpula do Ártico, a sua superfície branca e irregular iluminada por baixo em tons de azul e roxo, enquanto os visitantes davam a volta, parecendo mesmo pequenos ao lado de algo pensado para lembrar o próprio Ártico.
In the same dome, a small colony gathered on the rocks beside their pool, right at the edge of the water, completely unbothered by the visitors filing past just a few meters away behind the glass.

Na mesma cúpula, uma pequena colónia reunia se sobre as rochas junto à sua piscina, mesmo à beira de água, sem se preocupar nada com os visitantes que passavam a poucos metros de distância, do outro lado do vidro.
Further along, another corner of the same polar pool opened up, all carved icy looking rockwork and still water lit in deep blue and violet, with a floating platform waiting for whichever animal wanted to climb out and rest.

Mais à frente, abria se outro canto da mesma piscina polar, tudo em rochas esculpidas com aspeto de gelo e água parada iluminada em azul profundo e violeta, com uma plataforma flutuante à espera de que algum animal decidisse sair e descansar.
Looking almost straight up beside the iceberg model, the dome's fabric ceiling caught the light in circles of purple, green and blue, a small reminder of just how much engineering goes into recreating an Arctic mood indoors, under the Valencian sun.

A olhar quase direito para cima, junto ao modelo do icebergue, o tecido da cúpula captava a luz em círculos de roxo, verde e azul, um pequeno lembrete de quanta engenharia é precisa para recriar um ambiente ártico lá dentro, debaixo do sol valenciano.
Back among the marine mammals, two beluga whales drifted right up to the glass, their pale rounded heads and permanent gentle expressions making them one of Oceanogràfic's most beloved residents, and easily the highlight of this part of the visit.

De volta aos mamíferos marinhos, duas belugas aproximaram se mesmo do vidro, com as suas cabeças pálidas e arredondadas e a expressão sempre suave, tornando as num dos residentes mais queridos do Oceanogràfic, e sem dúvida o ponto alto desta parte da visita.
Outside again, we caught part of the show at the Dolphinarium, the largest of its kind in Europe, with dolphins leaping high out of the water while the skyline of the City of Arts and Sciences, and the rest of Valencia, watched on in the background.

Já lá fora, apanhámos parte do espetáculo no Delfinário, o maior do género na Europa, com golfinhos a saltar bem alto fora de água enquanto o horizonte da Cidade das Artes e das Ciências, e o resto de Valência, observava ao fundo.
We ended on a quieter note, with a close look at the dry Mediterranean vegetation growing along one of the paths, right beside an Oceanogràfic sign. A small, easy to miss detail, but a nice reminder that the park is about entire coastal habitats, not only tanks and shows.

Terminámos numa nota mais calma, com um olhar de perto sobre a vegetação seca mediterrânica que crescia ao longo de um dos caminhos, mesmo junto a uma placa do Oceanogràfic. Um pormenor pequeno e fácil de ignorar, mas um bom lembrete de que o parque é sobre habitats costeiros inteiros, e não só sobre tanques e espetáculos.
Oceanogràfic turned out to be one of those places where the architecture is almost as impressive as the animals living inside it. Between the sharks gliding overhead in the tunnel, the belugas pressing up against the glass, the penguins and the polar dome, and Félix Candela's water lily shaped roofs tying it all together, a single day barely felt like enough. If Valencia is on your list, this one deserves a full afternoon, if not more.

O Oceanogràfic acabou por ser um daqueles lugares onde a arquitetura é quase tão impressionante como os animais que vivem lá dentro. Entre os tubarões a deslizar por cima de nós no túnel, as belugas a encostarem se ao vidro, os pinguins e a cúpula polar, e os telhados em forma de nenúfar de Félix Candela a ligar tudo, um único dia mal chegou. Se Valência estiver nos teus planos, este merece uma tarde inteira, senão mais.
