Visit Portugal - Parque da Cidade

Rainy days often go unnoticed in the beauty of Portugal sunny reputation, but they hold a charm of their own.

When people think of Portugal, sunny days and clear skies often come to mind. Portugal, after all is famous for its golden beaches, warm weather and bright, cheerful atmosphere. But Portugal isn't always bathed in sunshine. It has its share of gray, rainy days that paint an entirely different picture one that is just as beautiful in its own way.

Quando as pessoas pensam em Portugal, vêm-lhes muitas vezes à memória dias de sol e céu limpo. Afinal, Portugal é famoso pelas suas praias douradas, clima quente e atmosfera alegre e luminosa. Mas Portugal nem sempre está banhado pelo sol. Tem a sua quota-parte de dias cinzentos e chuvosos que pintam um quadro totalmente diferente, que é igualmente bonito à sua maneira.

Recently, I decided to take a walk through 'Parque da Cidade do Porto', one of my favourite places, on a gray and overcast day. It was the kind of morning where many people would prefer to stay indoors, cozy with a hot drink, but I felt the pull of the outdoors. A fine drizzle, had begun to fall as I zipped up my jacket and headed out.

Recentemente decidi dar um passeio pelo Parque da Cidade do Porto, um dos meus locais preferidos, num dia cinzento e nublado. Era o tipo de manhã em que muitas pessoas preferem ficar em casa, aconchegadas com uma bebida quente, mas senti a atração do ar livre. Uma chuva miudinha começou a cair quando fechei o fecho da jaqueta e saí.

This is a place I return to time and again. Its sprawling green spaces, winding paths, and peaceful atmosphere make it a haven for those looking to relax, exercise or simply escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Located in the western part of Porto, near Matosinhos, the park stretches all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.

Este é um local ao qual regresso sempre. Os seus extensos espaços verdes, caminhos sinuosos e ambiente tranquilo fazem dele um refúgio para quem procura relaxar, fazer exercício ou simplesmente fugir da agitação da vida citadina. Situado na zona oeste do Porto, perto de Matosinhos, o parque estende-se até ao Oceano Atlântico.

Raindrops clung to the leaves of trees, glistening like tiny jewels, while the wet ground gave off the earthy scent of damp soil. Rain in Portugal is not as frequent as sunshine, but when it comes, its a gift for our environment. It nourishes the grass, the trees and the flowers, keeping nature vibrant and thriving.

Gotas de chuva colavam-se às folhas das árvores, brilhando como pequenas jóias, enquanto o chão molhado exalava o cheiro terroso do solo húmido. A chuva em Portugal não é tão frequente como o sol, mas quando chega é uma dádiva para o nosso ambiente. Nutre a relva, as árvores e as flores, mantendo a natureza vibrante e próspera.

Gray skies often have a reputation for being gloomy, but I find them soothing. Theres a stillness in the air, a sense of peace that's hard to find on sunny, bustling days. The rain seems to soften the edges of the world, making everything feel a little more intimate and serene.

Os céus cinzentos têm muitas vezes a reputação de serem sombrios, mas acho-os calmantes. Há uma quietude no ar, uma sensação de paz difícil de encontrar em dias ensolarados e movimentados. A chuva parece suavizar as arestas do mundo, tornando tudo um pouco mais íntimo e sereno.

One of my favourite spots in the park is the lake. Its a simple yet charming area where ducks and geese glide gracefully across the water. On this particular day, the lake looked especially picturesque.

Um dos meus locais favoritos no parque é o lago. É uma zona simples mas encantadora onde os patos e os gansos deslizam graciosamente pela água. Neste dia em particular, o lago parecia especialmente pitoresco.

I had brought along a small bag of stale bread, something I often do when I visit. Rather than throw old bread away, I like to bring it here to share with the park’s feathered residents. As I approached the waters edge, a few geese spotted me and waddled over.

I tossed small pieces of bread into the water, and soon a small crowd of ducks and geese had gathered. Watching them paddle around, quacking softly, is always a delight.

Trouxe um pequeno saco de pão velho, algo que faço com frequência quando visito. Em vez de deitar fora o pão velho, gosto de o trazer aqui para partilhar com os habitantes emplumados do parque. Quando me aproximei da beira da água, alguns gansos avistaram-me e aproximaram-se.

Atirei pequenos pedaços de pão para a água e logo se reuniu uma pequena multidão de patos e gansos. Observá-los a nadar, a grasnar baixinho, é sempre uma delícia.

The paths in this park wind through a variety of landscapes, from open meadows to dense groves of trees. As I continued my walk, I passed clusters of tall pines, their needles glistening with rain, and fields of grass dotted with wildflowers. Even under a gray sky, the colours of the park were vibrant greens, yellows, and browns blending harmoniously.

Os caminhos deste parque serpenteiam por paisagens variadas, desde prados abertos a densos arvoredos. Ao continuar a minha caminhada, passei por aglomerados de pinheiros altos, com as suas agulhas a brilhar com a chuva, e campos relvados salpicados de flores silvestres. Mesmo sob um céu cinzento, as cores do parque eram verdes vibrantes, amarelos e castanhos que se misturavam harmoniosamente.

This is more than just a park, its a retreat from the fast-paced rhythm of urban life. On sunny days, its filled with families picnicking, children playing, and cyclists zipping along the paths. But on days like this, when the rain keeps most people indoors, it feels like a private sanctuary.

Isto é mais do que um parque, é um refúgio do ritmo acelerado da vida urbana. Em dias de sol, está repleto de famílias a fazer piqueniques, crianças a brincar e ciclistas a percorrer os trilhos. Mas em dias como este, quando a chuva mantém a maioria das pessoas dentro de casa, parece um santuário privado.

I've often thought about how important it is to have places like this. In a world thats constantly moving, having a space where you can slow down, breathe deeply and simply be is invaluable. Whether you are walking, running, or just sitting quietly on a bench, this park offers a chance to reconnect with nature and with yourself.

Muitas vezes pensei sobre como é importante ter lugares como este. Num mundo em constante movimento, ter um espaço onde se pode abrandar, respirar profundamente e simplesmente ser é inestimável. Quer esteja a caminhar, a correr ou apenas sentado tranquilamente num banco, este parque oferece a oportunidade de se reconectar com a natureza e consigo mesmo.

If you're ever in Porto, I highly recommend a visit to Parque da Cidade. Its located in the western part of the city, with main entrance near Avenida da Boavista.
