Yo no sé otra manera.

The mountain burns on all four sides while the volunteer forest firefighters try to put out the fire with the few resources they have, they are young, their captain is barely thirty years old. The heat and smoke suffocates them, but they continue to do what they have to do, prevent the fire from gaining strength and continue its voracious race destroying everything.

Mariana stands on a steep slope, her face with a yellow helmet and glasses, is filled with smut, her gloved hands holding the frame, beating the inexorably burning vegetation. The orange flames spread unchecked. A strong breeze changes the direction of the fire and the group of five young men and their captain are trapped between the flames and the rock wall.

Just a year ago, Mariana was trying to convince her mother to support her decision to join the volunteer forest fire department in the town where they live. She is just 18 years old and is beginning to study veterinary medicine at university.

"Mother, I want to do it, the mountain needs our support, every year it burns more than anything else because of the unconsciousness of the people who start burning garbage and then complain about the smoke that reaches their homes and affects them. Year after year since I can remember I have experienced this".

"Daughter, this is very dangerous, and I don't want you to risk it, you are very young, and you are studying, you can help in another way".

"How can I? Don't I know another way?"

"Yes, there is, by raising people's awareness. It is the best way because there is little they can do to put out these fires".

"I don't think I have the patience for that, I'm very impulsive and other people already do it, but few decide to be firemen. And you were a fireman, Mom, one of the first in the state, you should understand me".

"That's why I'm telling you". Her mother was closed to any discussion.

Mariana goes to talk to her grandmother to help her convince her mother. She finds her in the living room, sitting in her rocking chair, watching the novel and knitting. She goes over and gives her a kiss on her white head and crouches down beside her.

"Grandma, dear, I need you to help me". And she tells him what she is determined to do.

"My beautiful granddaughter, I admire you, you are a sensitive and loving young woman, I feel proud of you and that you want to help nature, you have always been like that, since you were a little girl, when you used to bring us little animals you found in the street to take care of them, he, he, he and I remember that little mouse you didn't let us kill. And when you fought with the boy next door because he was kicking a cat. We had to get you off him."

"Oh, Grandma, I was so angry, but then I felt sorry for her that she reacted that way".

"I'm going to tell you something that my daughter probably hasn't told you, she doesn't like to stir up those memories. When I was a fireman, there was an emergency in the coastal area, an explosion and a fire of great magnitude. They called all the fire departments that could help. That day she couldn't go because she had just been told she was pregnant with you. There was another explosion and all her friends died. It was a very tragic day. That's why she doesn't accept that you want to risk your life. She is your mother, and she wants to protect you".

Mariana's mother ends up respecting her daughter's decision, even though her heart does not accept it. Mariana receives the necessary instructions to join the fire department and becomes a guardian of the mountain.

The heat is suffocating, the flames are getting bigger, and there is nothing the six volunteers can do but get closer to protect themselves. Mariana feels that they no longer have time. She wishes she could say goodbye to her mother and grandmother. Mommy, grandmother, forgive me, I love you. Her thoughts want to fly to where they are.

But nature changes this ending and again the wind blows in the opposite direction, The flames move away from the group. Another chance to continue living.

Mariana walks down the mountain with her friends. They are done for the day. And she, in spite of the great fright she has had, will continue to give all her physical and spiritual strength, that which drives her to serve, to help. What her heart and her essence as a sensitive and protective woman tells her what she must do.
