A History of Reciprocity

Frank lived in a small cabin in the woods, which he had built himself. As every morning he began his routine by going to collect firewood, he chose to take the most winding path in the forest, which although was the most dangerous, but also the shortest, because he wanted to save some time, since he had several activities to do.

Observing very carefully where he stepped, holding in his hand a stick he tested the ground, aware of the danger of the area, he began to descend.

Once he crossed the river and was close to the place where he used to cut firewood, he heard a strange noise, it seemed like the moan of a wounded animal, he tuned up his ears and went to the direction from which the strange moan came.

The moan could be heard closer, he saw a silhouette that was lying imprisoned between a pile of rocks and branches, he quickened his pace and when he arrived he realized that it was not an animal but a young hiker. He quickly began to remove the rocks and branches to free the injured young man who complained incessantly.

Frank improvised a stretcher with sticks, branches and bushes and transferred the young man to the cabin; he laid him on his cot, he looked the injuries that the unconscious young man had suffered. He dedicated the next few hours to healing the young man, placing herbal ointments on all his wounds, giving him several sips of an infusion to drink, and placing warm compresses on the young man's forehead to reduce the fever.

That same night the young man regained consciousness, Frank decided to prepare something to eat for both of them, opened the small cupboard, took out two cans of beans, heated them and they had dinner.

The next day Frank with his old radio located the rangers, who went to Route 71 of the Forested River to look for the young man. As he said goodbye, the young man thanked Frank for saving his life and promised never to forget what he had done for him.

The young hiker and Frank always maintained correspondence between them. The young man wrote him letters telling him about his adventures through the different trails, mountains, and routes he was able to travel.

One morning the young man was waiting for the postman, possibly the heavy rain that had fallen during that morning would have delayed the deliveries. He turned on the radio while preparing to go to work, suddenly he heard that there had been a landslide on Route 71 of the Forested River, that a man named Frank had been injured when his cabin was destroyed.

The young man immediately picked up the phone, made a few calls and left in a hurry. After several hours of traveling, the young man arrived at the scene, saw Frank trying to recover his belongings, the young man approached his friend, put his hand on his shoulder and asked him to turn around. As Frank turned, he saw several young men unloading wood and construction materials from a truck.

Now it's my turn to return the gesture my friend.
