Good afternoon, friends of Hive and the Black and White community.

Buenas tardes, amigos y amigas de Hive y de la comunidad Black and White.

Last Sunday, the power came back to my neighborhood after four weeks of hardship and uncertainty without electricity. And when I say without electricity, I mean zero—nothing. There was barely five minutes of power over the course of 23 days before I heard the deafening explosion of the transformer on the corner once again.

El domingo pasado volvió la luz a mi barrio, después de cuatro semanas de penurias e incertidumbre sin electricidad. Y cuando digo sin electricidad, me refiero a cero: nada. Apenas cinco minutos de corriente en 23 días, antes de escuchar nuevamente la ensordecedora explosión del transformador de la esquina.

Our pantries were empty, of course. Living day to day, improvising ways to provide light and cool down during the hot August nights, or trying to preserve food—these things became part of our routine.

Las despensas vacías, por supuesto. Vivir el día a día, inventar formas de alumbrar y refrescar las calurosas noches de agosto o tratar de conservar los alimentos se convirtió en parte de nuestras rutinas.

Situations like this are happening to millions of Cubans right now. In my own case, I am taking this opportunity to share a handful of photographs intended simply to show the contrasts of daily life for Cubans, despite all the hardships.

Situaciones como esta les están ocurriendo ahora mismo a millones de cubanos. En mi caso particular, aprovecho esta oportunidad para compartir un manojo de fotografías cuya única intención es mostrar los contrastes de la vida diaria del cubano, a pesar de los pesares.

During those days, rekindling my passions—music, reading, poetry, and photography—was a good way to distract myself and stay resilient. When I was finally able to access the images on my camera, I didn't know where to start. Ultimately, I chose a few photos taken during the linemen's intense workday, while my neighbors waited in anticipation.

Durante aquellos días, reactivar las pasiones, la música, la lectura, la poesía y la fotografía fue una buena manera de distraerme y resistir. Cuando por fin pude acceder al material de mi cámara, no sabía por dónde empezar. Finalmente, elegí algunas imágenes tomadas durante la intensa jornada de trabajo de los linieros, mientras los vecinos de mi barrio aguardaban expectantes.
