I am retired with a very busy life style but I am always looking for something else to do. My husband and I love fresh fruit and vegetables, especially since he became Vegan, earlier this year. Vegans of Steemit has a competition, "#fruitsandveggiesmonday" where steemians display fruits and veggies from their gardens, farmers market, or plant based recipes. I admire those who prepare plant based dishes with fruits and veggies from their gardens or just display items from their garden.
So, here I go. Since I don't have a green thumb I turned to google for a lot of my gardening questions. Then I joined Home Depot's Garden Club, started following Roots and Refuge, watched videos on YouTube, and checked out the garden community on Steemit.
The first step was to find a location for my garden that would receive at least 8 hours of sun each day. I decided on an area next to my garage. There use to be a big tree in that area, but my husband had it cut down because the roots were getting too big and he didn't won't them to compromise the foundation of our house. When I looked at the ground in that area, I found that the soil was too sandy and had a lot of gold glitter in the soil, no, it is not gold. The tree roots were showing through the ground and they were everywhere. Also, my husband had used rubber mulch in that area. It was looking like this was not going to be a good area for my garden.
With prayer and reading, I decided to have a raised bed garden. When I was researching raised bed gardens, I found that there many ways to build or make one. I even found where you could start your garden right in a bag of soil, plastic trash cans, or different size containers. I settled on a raised bed garden from Sam's Club that was just the right size for a starter garden. It was 3.5 feet by 7 feet.
With the location settled, I set about cleaning up the area. There was a pallet of bricks that had been sitting under that big tree for several years and had acquired a lot of dirt, leaves, and spiders. In my reading I found that you could build a raised bed garden by outlining the area with bricks. Light bulb moment, I could use the bricks that I already had to build a garden. Since I had already ordered the garden bed from Sam's Club, I will work on the brick bed later on.
This is the area that I chose for my garden
As I cleaned the bricks, I placed them around the entire garden area. I also outlined a garden bed with the bricks for the future. I stacked the bricks two bricks high, but I will need to add more bricks if I use that area for a garden bed. I think I have enough bricks to make the wall 3 bricks high for now.
The outlined area in white is where the raised bed garden from Sam's Club is going.
I am so excited about my garden, I can't wait until I have some veggies from my garden. If anyone has any tips for a newbie gardener, please let me know. I want my garden to be successful.
Until next week's update, enjoy your fruits and veggies.
