It is believed that the mountain, most likely, got its name from the Celtic word dru-mi-tor, which means "water from the mountain".
Durmitor is located in the northwest of Montenegro. It abounds in mountain peaks, of which as many as 48 are over 2,000 m (the highest is Bobotov kuk with an altitude of 2,523 m). There are about twenty glacial lakes, scattered throughout the area, which Jovan Cvijic named "mountain eyes".
Mountain is surrounded by rich evergreen forests and intersected by clear rivers that create beautiful canyons. Tara River Canyon is one of the most beautiful in the world.
Durmitor with the surrounding areas was declared a national park in 1952.
In 1980, Durmitor National Park was included in the World Cultural and Natural Heritage List, while the Tara River and its canyon valley were included in the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere program in 1977 as world biosphere reserves.
There are numerous cultural monuments from the ancient period to modern times. The most characteristic are the medieval monuments: the ruins of cities and fortifications, bridges and watchtowers, necropolises, tombstones and monastery complexes in the valley of the river Tara.
As examples of ethnological heritage, it is important to mention the types of so-called rural houses "Savardake" and mills scattered on Durmitor streams.
