When I need to texturize blood, make it clots, or flesh, I usually mix what I have (either glycerin or honey) with coffee grounds and vegetable coloring. (Coffee grounds are used a lot as a freckle simulation in everyday makeup).

The problem with this is that the mixture must be separate, without contaminating the whole pot or where the blood is stored, and use the measured amount for that job. If stored it can get moldy, even if the honey is a preserve, the mixture causes it to spoil since we are dealing with edible elements.
