Three Days in Büyükada Part 3: A Quiet Walk to Our Home (eng-tr)
This post is another part of my Büyükada series. In my previous posts, I shared our ferry trip from Istanbul and our first hours in the center of Büyükada. This time, I want to share one of my favorite parts of the trip, our walk to the house where we would stay.
Bu yazı Büyükada serimin bir başka bölümü. Önceki yazılarımda İstanbul’dan vapur yolculuğumuzu ve Büyükada merkezindeki ilk saatlerimizi paylaşmıştım. Bu kez gezinin en sevdiğim bölümlerinden birini, kalacağımız eve doğru yaptığımız yürüyüşü anlatmak istiyorum.
After spending some time in the center, we took one of the small minibuses on the island. At one point, we got off the minibus, but later we realized that we had been directed to the wrong place. Normally this could be annoying, especially because we had heavy bags with us. But now I am actually happy that it happened.
Normalde bu biraz can sıkıcı olabilirdi. Üstelik ağır çantalarımız da vardı. Ama şimdi iyi ki böyle olmuş diyorum.
Because of this small mistake, we walked for around thirty minutes. And the road was beautiful. The weather was still cool and comfortable. The day had not become very hot yet.
Bu küçük hata sayesinde yaklaşık yarım saat yürüdük. Ve yol gerçekten çok güzeldi. Hava henüz çok ısınmamıştı. Serin ve rahat bir hava vardı.
The streets were quiet and there were huge trees everywhere. Some of the trees looked very old. Their branches covered the road and created a lot of shade. Walking under those trees felt very peaceful.
There were also many beautiful houses on the road. I really liked the old white wooden houses. Some had large gardens, flowers and beautiful fences. When I looked at them, I felt like I was walking in another time.
Büyükada has a very different atmosphere from central Istanbul. There are no normal private cars everywhere. You mostly see official vehicles, electric minibuses and bicycles.
Büyükada’nın atmosferi İstanbul merkezinden gerçekten çok farklı. Her yerde normal özel araçlar görmüyorsunuz.
Years ago, horse carriages were very common on the island. Later, there were many complaints about the conditions of the horses, and the carriage system ended. Today, the small electric minibuses are one of the main ways to travel around the island.
I found these minibuses very cute. Their windows are open, and while you are sitting inside, it almost feels like you are taking a small island tour.
But during our walk, bicycles were everywhere. People passed us on their bicycles all the time. I think many people who live or stay on the island get used to cycling because Büyükada has many hills.
We were lucky because most of our road was easier, but some parts of the island are really steep. I also noticed that there were not many people walking long distances. Maybe carrying our bags made us look like real tourists.
Still, I loved this thirty minute walk. The streets were peaceful. There were trees, gardens, old houses and small views of the sea between them. Sometimes we stopped just to look around or take another photo.
For me, these simple moments are sometimes the best part of travelling. You do not always need a famous place or a big activity. Sometimes a quiet road, beautiful weather and a good walk are enough.
By the end of the walk, we were definitely tired because of our bags, but we were also very excited. We were getting closer to the house where we would stay for the next few days.
And then we finally arrived. I will leave the best part for my next post because the view from our house deserves its own story. I am sharing a small hint in the last photo. See you in the next part of my Büyükada series.
