The morning was heavy with mist, the air damp and clinging like an unwelcome memory. I found myself awake earlier than usual, drawn outside to circle Mierendorff Island in the faint light of dawn. At the island's northwestern corner loomed the Charlottenburg Ship Lock, its weir murmuring with the steady rush of water. I stood there, as I often did, breathing deeply and letting the sound envelop me. This morning, though, the ship lock took on an eerie life of its own. Shrouded in fog, it resembled a ghostly portal, as if a phantom ship might glide silently through at any moment aiming for the end of time on the other side. The scene felt timeless, its haunting beauty more vivid than words could capture. Something about the mist and the muted roar of water pulled me out of my thoughts and into the present, a fleeting reminder of how the mundane can feel almost magical.
