Okay, dragonflies are not actually flies. But if they were, they would certainly reign supreme over the rest of the turd-dwellers. The monarchs of manure. The emperors of excrement. The sultans of shit. All great band names. So, what makes dragonflies(and damselflies) so awesome?
I Believe this is a Halloween Pennant dragonfly.
Flight
Some species of dragonflies can fly at speeds of over 30 miles per hour. They can twist, turn, hover, change direction in an instant, and even fly backwards. Dragonflies also have a 360 degree field of vision. These combined skills make the dragonfly a very efficient predator.
Might
The main diet of adult dragonflies are other flying insects, particularly mosquitoes. They are capable of tracking moving prey and intercepting it in mid air. Dragonflies do not have teeth - once in it's grasp, prey is eaten by very strong mandibles. Rarely do they miss their intended target.
Light
The realm of the dragonfly is the realm of light. They are only out during the day and summer is their most powerful time. Just as light can bend and be adapted in a variety of ways, so can the forces associated with the dragonfly. It is one of the most adaptable insects which is why it has survived for so long.
The dragonfly in my video seemed very interested in this particular stalk sticking out of the ground. Probably because it gave me the best view. It keep taking off and landing on the same one. Over and over. I filmed it for a while. Unfortunately, the dragonfly was out of focus for most of the footage. Luckily, I did get a few good seconds. Enough to get a couple of good still shots and make some nice slow-mo to put at the end of the video.
