English

Big hello, hivers! I hope you're all doing well. This time, I'm bringing you a very interesting topic to discuss. But more than a topic, it's a brief introduction to an exercise that many people want to try when they're starting out with calisthenics.

I'm referring to dips, also known as push-ups. They're an excellent exercise for building strength in the chest, triceps, and shoulders. Here, I'll guide you step by step on how to do your first push-up, from progressions if you're not strong enough yet, to correctly executing the entire movement.

Preparation and Initial Considerations

Before you begin, keep these crucial points in mind for your safety and to optimize your workout.

- Warm-up: Always warm up properly. Focus on shoulder, elbow, and wrist mobility. Some recommended exercises include arm rotations, gentle chest and triceps stretches, and some push-ups to activate your muscles.

- Stable Bars: Make sure the parallel bars you use are stable, don't wobble, and can safely support your weight.

- Form over Quantity: Correct technique is more important than the number of repetitions. Good form prevents injuries and ensures the right muscles are engaged.

- Know Your Limits: Don't push yourself too hard at first. Listen to your body and progress at your own pace.

Progressions to Achieve Your First Full Dip

If you can't yet do a full dip on your own, don't worry. It's completely normal, and the key is to gradually build the necessary strength.

1. Push-ups

This is the most basic progression and allows you to control the amount of body weight you use. You can position yourself on the floor or on low parallel bars to do these. Hold the bars with a firm grip, palms facing in, and arms fully extended. Slowly locking your elbows, bend your elbows, and lower your body. Keep your elbows pointing slightly back, not out to the sides. Then push up, extending your arms. Focus on feeling the contraction in your chest and triceps.

2. Negative Dips

Negative dips are incredibly effective because they build eccentric strength (the lowering phase), which is crucial for the full movement. Step onto the parallel bars (you can use a bench, a jump, or have someone push you) to the top position with your arms fully extended. From that position, lower your body as slowly and in a controlled manner as possible. Aim for a descent lasting 3 to 5 seconds. Maintain proper form (torso slightly bent, elbows controlled). Once you reach the bottom of your range of motion (or as far as you can maintain your form), push back up to the starting position with a kick or a jump. Don't worry about the push-up phase at this point.

3. Resistance Band Assisted Dips

Once you gain some strength, resistance bands are an excellent tool to assist with the movement. Loop a thick resistance band through both parallel bars, creating a loop that you can insert your knees or feet into. The thicker the band, the more assistance it will provide. Place your knees or feet inside the loop of the band and perform the dip as you normally would. The band will help you lift your body weight, making the movement easier, especially in the lower body, where it's often most difficult.

- Conoce tus l铆mites: No te fuerces demasiado al principio. Escucha a tu cuerpo y progresa a tu propio ritmo.
