It's the end of the year, but at the same time, it's only a few days until my final exams. I traveled home just for the holidays, and now I'll have to return to school after next week. Before I do so, however, I thought I would see if I could get some "end-of-year" discounts since I was near the supermarket. But I was wrong. I visited the supermarket and things are really expensive.

I needed just a few things to take care of myself as I had run out of them and had been managing for too long. And the first thing that came to mind was my body lotion. It's the harmattan season here, and it's super dry everywhere. Continuing without my body lotion didn't make sense, but the problem was that I couldn't find it.

I don't like to change my stuff. If it's going to be Vaseline, then it will be Vaseline for maybe 10 years. But I'm not old.

I figured, well, Dove didn't seem like a bad product anyway. They have made a good name for themselves for many years now, so I felt I could trust them. The problem now was choosing the product.

I like my body lotion to smell nice, just as I want to feel comfortable using it. But there was no way for me to figure out which one to pick, so I just picked the one that seemed to be in the middle: It had "normal skin" written on it, and I do have normal skin, so I picked it.

I needed some body soap. I usually stick with Dettol bathing soaps since they are medicated. This time, I went for the Skin Care variant. People often think it's a kind of soap for women simply because it's pink, but it really is a mild soap that smells nice. I like to smell and feel nice.

I should have gone for normal toothpaste, but I was feeling a little adventurous and curious about how this Sensodyne toothpaste really works. I seem to have very sensitive teeth, and this toothpaste has been suggested by some friends to help with my recurring issues. I wasn't sure about the price, but I just took it.

Is smelling fresh a hobby? I'm not sure, but it's something that I have always loved to do. It's satisfying to hear someone say, "Oh, you smell really good." However, I haven't been getting that lately as I haven't been wearing any deodorant for quite a while. And I needed some new deodorant spray too.

I used to use Axe many years ago, and for some reason, I stopped seeing it around. I loved it, and seeing it again after so long made me jump at the chance to buy it.

And then finally, I saw some coffee. I immediately remembered that my final exams were coming up, and also that I had been feeling super lazy and out of energy lately. I figured returning to my routine of drinking coffee in the mornings or when I needed to study may just be what I'll do again.

I have a goal of sleeping a lot more in this new year, however, I may still need some caffeine to boost my energy when I need to work. It'll only be for a while anyway.

While I was selecting these things I needed, I couldn't really determine their prices as they weren't labeled properly. I just estimated in my mind what would fit into my budget and went straight to the counter.

When I got there, however, I felt as though I should jettison the little things I had gathered and head back home, where I belong. The prices I found were outrageously higher than what I would have guessed. I mean, are things really that bad in the country? Jeezzz, I didn't realize!

I handed my card to the suspiciously nice attendant and proceeded to make payment. I could not help but feel like I was being cheated or something.

I shouldn't have been surprised anyway. It's not like I would expect to walk back into the same supermarket tomorrow morning and find the same prices I did today. "Yesterday's price is not today's price" is on another level in this country.

I actually got more things than I've talked about here, but I didn't get photos of them. And from the receipt, you'll see that I spent โ‚ฆ18,100 ($25), but one finger of mine can lift them all; things have gotten really expensive! I could have bought them all for half the price just about a year ago. Oh well, I'll have to work harder.

I figured I'd make this entry into #MarketFriday by dswigle@dswigle to share with y'all.
