I was always drawn to the open sea, but my mother hated that for me; she never wanted to talk about the open sea with me or her reason for hating the sea so much. I loved visiting the sea shores, I walk the sea shores every evening and it was like a tradition for me, whenever I am there it feels like the sea calls out for me, I can hear the silent whispers, deep within me I knew I had a connection with the sea but whenever I try to connect with the sea my mom always stands in the way.
Visiting the sea shores and watching pirates sail off into the unknown experiencing what it feels like to be free only leaves me wanting to do same, whenever it is heard by my mother that I visited the sea shore my mother always scolded me and sometimes it feels like she wants to eat me up while I am still breathing and that only helps to explain how much she hates the sea and everything about it but her shouts does not deter me, it felt like it was destiny.
We never talk about my father. Whenever I as questions about him, I was always shut down, and I was not allowed anywhere near the basement where his things were kept, more like my mother did not want me finding out anything about him; she wanted to force me to drift in a completely different direction and have nothing to do with him. All I knew was that he was a captain, the famous captain Jack everyone talks about, a navy captain or a pirate captain, I cannot tell, never saw his pictures, my mom really wanted to make sure I don't end up like him and to make her happy, I accepted my fate and stopped asking questions.
One evening, I was sitting on a rock by the seashore like always, when a pirate ship anchored in the sea and used its canoes to sail to the shore.
"We get supplies and then we sail for Sea Haven." The man with the captain's hat ordered
"Aye aye, captain." The crew members responded as they all scattered into town to get supplies.
I sat there admiring and wishing one of me too wil get to experience the open sea, I have heard it is as blue as words cannot express. I was completely lost in thought when a voice called me back to reality.
"Come here, boy." The voice called out, and looking up, it was the captain, and I was forced to tremble
"Mmmmee?" I asked, stuttering and putting my hand on my chest
"Yes, boy, don't be afraid, not gonna hurt ya." The captain said as he walked towards me.
I was shocked, and the shock caused me to freeze. I was just sitting until the captain approached me and rubbed my head, and sat on the stone with me.
"You look like an old friend of mine, boy. Who is your father?" The captain asked
"I don't know much about him; all I know is he is the famous captain Jack everyone in the village talks about," I responded
Immediately, he jumped down from the stone, taking a closer look at me. "When I saw ya, I knew you had it in you. I just knew his legacy lives on, so ya don't know anything about your father, Captain Jack?" The captain asked
"Yes, Captain," I responded
"That's my boy." He said as he rubbed my head again "your father was a pirate just like me self, we sailed to distant shores in search of treasures, uncharted territories by humans called out for us, the sea is ours, your father had a share of his stolen treasures buried in a distant shore and sailed out for more with the hope of returning to dig them back up and go back to his son, he wanted to stop being a pirate after that last mission but fate had other plans that day, the sea roared and it took him, it was his fate to die a pirate and he did, he was a good lad." The captain said as he took off his hat.
"We have set sail for Sea Haven, Captain." One of the crew members shouted, interrupting our conversation.
"See you when I see you, boy." The captain said as he threw a coin up for me to catch.
"The sea took the love of her life." I thought to myself as I felt for my mother and realising her reason for hating the sea but my love for the sea was in born.
Learning that my father was a pirate left me even more fascinated by the sea. I wanted to experience the sea even more, and I rushed home and straight to the basement, which was an uncharted territory for me, but just like my father, it called out for me, and I responded. I went through his stuff, I saw his pictures for the first time in my life and that helped confirm that he was indeed a pirate. I saw a journal, and as I flipped through the yellow pages of his journal, he talked about his journey, but behind every page was a map, and I believe they led to his treasures buried on distant shores.
"When I come of age, I will set sail to distant shores in search of what belongs to my family. I will experience the sea just like my father," I shouted in the basement as I put on his hat.
"It was only a matter of time before you found out about everything. I knew I could not stop the whispers of the sea calling out for you." My mother, who heard what I said, muttered.
