Enjoying healthy meals at home sometimes takes a bit of effort to prepare. After all, in addition to making the main meal the whole family usually enjoys, we’re also expected to prepare a meal just for ourselves, right? This is exactly what sometimes makes us feel really unmotivated when we’re on a diet.
Well, today I’d like to give you a peek at my healthy breakfast routine. I usually boil sweet potatoes, eggs, and vegetables for breakfast. Not only for breakfast—sometimes this becomes my lunch as well. As for the portion size, it’s quite filling, and for me, it’s a very generous serving. Usually, my husband and I share a portion this size.
Next, this dish is prepared by steaming. Actually, boiling is also an option, but if you boil bananas mixed with other ingredients, the color turns out really unappealing. So the best alternative is to steam them—you’ll get a perfect final result. There are no special ingredients in this dish; it’s purely natural and simply steamed. However, to make it more flavorful, I usually add some boiled chili sauce. Curious about the ingredients and how to make it? Let’s take a look below.
Ingredients
Ingredients for Steamed Dishes
1 egg
3 kepok bananas
3 stalks of bok choy
1 purple sweet potato
1 honey sweet potato
Ingredients for Sambal
4 cloves of red onion
9 “devil’s” cayenne peppers
3 cloves of garlic
Salt to taste
Mushroom broth to taste (optional)
Preparation Steps
I prepare all the ingredients in advance—especially the sweet potatoes, which will be steamed—and make sure to scrub and wash them thoroughly so there’s no dirt left on them.
Then, wash the other ingredients thoroughly as well.
Next, steam all the ingredients until cooked through. Start steaming once the water is boiling so they cook more evenly. When steaming the bok choy, remove it a little sooner because it cooks quickly.
For the sambal, I boil it in boiling water until tender—about 5 minutes—then immediately pound it coarsely by hand. Don’t forget to season it with salt and broth just before pounding.
Presentation
Serve on a platter with one sliced banana and sweet potatoes cut into two different colors. Cut the steamed egg in half. Finally, top it with some delicious boiled sambal—I intentionally left out the shrimp paste, but if you’d like to add some, go ahead; it’s absolutely fantastic. Finally, arrange the steamed bok choy neatly—just look at how perfect it turned out.
One glass of soy milk is enough for this morning; my husband bought it on purpose when he came home from work yesterday. This soy milk has become a staple in our household. It’s so delicious—fresh and usually warm when my husband brings it home in the afternoon.
All the steamed dishes taste absolutely delicious. If you’re used to enjoying real food like this, you’ll definitely love it—and it’s such a pleasure to enjoy steamed dishes like these. Next time, I might invite you to prepare another steamed dish with a different variation, of course.
