Last week marked the thirty-second anniversary of the release in the United States of a film that marked an era in the world. This event took place at the beginning of the 90's, being an iconic film for its generation. Although the decade of the 80's had just ended, which was called by some scholars as the dumb generation, or the lost generation, because everything was dedicated to fashion, to the superfluous, to luxury, this film showed signs of concern for social events that have shaken our society for many years.
La semana pasada se cumplió el treinta y dos aniversario del estreno en los Estados Unidos de Norte América de un film cinematográfico que marco una era en el mundo. Este evento transcurrió en pleno inicio de la época de los 90, siendo una película icónica para su generación. Aunque recién finalizaba la década de los 80, la cual fue denominada por algunos estudiosos como la generación boba, o la generación perdida, porque todo era dedicado a la moda, a lo superfluo, al lujo está película, mostraba signos de preocupación por eventos sociales que han estremecido por muchos años a nuestra sociedad.
Maybe here in Venezuela it should have been released the following year, I don't remember the year, but I do remember visiting it at the Atlas movie theater in my city. The plot of the film focuses on an executive, who was nominated as Yuppie, starring Richard Gere, facing loneliness in his sentimental and love life for being dedicated body and soul to his business as an executive of the stock exchange resorts to hire the services of a prostitute starring Julia Roberts. In those years, we young people dreamed of becoming successful businessmen, of becoming stock brokers. I remember that the newspaper El Nacional carried the stock market quotations from Caracas, New York and even Tokyo. On the other hand, the subject of prostitution was something taboo, and the young men who frequented those places were rejected by the young university girls.
Quizás aquí en Venezuela se debió haber estrenado para el año siguiente, no recuerdo el año, pero si recuerdo haberla visito en el cine Atlas de mi ciudad. La trama de la película se centra en un ejecutivo, los cuales se nominaban como Yuppie, protagonizado por Richard Gere ante la soledad en su vida sentimental y amorosa por estar dedicado en cuerpo y alma a sus negocios como ejecutivo de la bolsa de valores recurre a contratar los servicios de una prostituta protagonizada por Julia Roberts. En esos años los jóvenes soñábamos con convertirnos en empresarios exitosos, en ser corredores de acciones de valores, recuerdo que en el diario el Nacional traía las cotizaciones del mercado bursátil de caracas, de Nueva York y hasta de Tokio. Mientras que, por otra parte, el tema de la prostitución era algo tabú, y a los jóvenes que frecuentaban esos sitios recibían cierto rechazo por parte de las jovencitas universitarias.
There was debate at the time as to whether or not a successful man, a future college student, should pay for sex, let alone pay for love. There were also a huge number of girls who maintained the importance of virginity until the consummation of marriage.
Another scene of great impact because of the depth of the subject is when the protagonist Richard Gere beats his best friend, who upon learning that his influential friend's new fiancée was actually a call girl. The film's writers, as well as its director, put quite a bit of emphasis on the scene when the protagonist says a resounding NO to the intentions of her boyfriend's heartless friend. It is one of the first times that male violence begins to be shown. Until this film, women were always shown with a complicit silence, accepting the sexual advances of any man. It is something meritorious and a breakthrough for its time.
Se debatía en aquella época si un hombre exitoso, un futuro universitario, debía o no pagar por sexo y menos si debía pagar por amor. Había también una enorme cantidad de muchachas que sostenían la importancia de la virginidad hasta llegar la consumación del matrimonio.
Otra escena de gran impacto por la profundidad del tema es cuando el protagonista Richard Gere golpea a su mejor amigo, quien al saber que la nueva prometida de su influyente amigo era en realidad una dama de compañía. Los escritores de la película, así como su director, pusieron bastante énfasis en la escena cuando la protagonista dice un rotundo NO a las intenciones del desalmado amigo de su novio. Es una de las primeras veces que se comienza a mostrar la violencia machista. Hasta esta película las mujeres siempre eran mostradas con un silencio cómplice, aceptando los avances sexuales de cualquier hombre. Es algo meritorio y de mucho avance para su época.
Today, three decades later, both social phenomena still exist in the world. Prostitution has evolved to industry levels, social networks are a means of cultivation, there is nothing romantic about this industry that in many cases enslaves and kidnaps women around the world to exploit them to death. For its part, macho violence has had a greater evidence, huge awareness campaigns are made for women to assert their right to say NO. We still have a long way to go, but we are more aware than when mujer bonita was released.
Hoy, tres décadas después, ambos fenómenos sociales siguen existiendo en el mundo. La prostitución ha evolucionado a niveles de industria, las redes sociales son un medio de cultivo, no hay nada de romántico en esta industria que en muchos casos esclavisa y secuestra mujeres en todo el mundo para explotarlas hasta la muerte. Por su parte, la violencia machista ha tenido una mayor evidencia, se hacen enormes campañas de concientización para que las mujeres hagan valer su derecho a decir que NO. Aún nos falta por avanzar, pero estamos más conscientes que cuando se estrenó mujer bonita.
