The House Also Speaks #24

The Door That Squeaks When Opened at Night

There is a door in my house that seems to have its own schedule for making noise. During the day, when people are talking, the television is on, and things are moving from one room to another, its squeak hardly matters. But at night, when everyone is asleep and the house is quiet, that same door can make a sound that seems loud enough to wake the whole building.

I know it well. If I get up to use the bathroom or go to the kitchen for a glass of water, I already know what I am up against. I approach the door carefully, turn the handle as slowly as I can, and try to move it little by little. Sometimes I think I have managed to open it without a sound, only to hear that sharp squeak just when I am about to congratulate myself. I stop for a moment and listen, wondering whether anyone has woken up. If everything remains quiet, I continue on my way, relieved that my little operation has gone unnoticed.

The funny thing is that the more I try to be quiet, the more aware I become of every movement. I watch how I place my feet, how I hold the handle, and even how quickly I breathe. A simple trip across the house becomes a small mission. Of course, there is an easier solution: put some oil on the hinges and stop worrying about it. I have thought about it more than once, although, as happens with so many little things around the house, the days go by and the door keeps squeaking.

Living with other people involves these small adjustments. We learn their schedules, recognize their habits, and try not to disturb their rest. We close drawers gently, lower our voices, and avoid turning on a light if it is not necessary. These gestures may seem unimportant, but they are part of sharing a home. Everyone needs moments of rest and a little space of their own, even when that space is only a bedroom or a quiet corner.

Still, it is not always possible to move through life without making a sound. Sometimes we have to make a decision that changes the family routine, bring up a subject that nobody wants to discuss, or explain that something no longer works for us. We may choose our words carefully and try to avoid hurting anyone, yet the conversation can still cause discomfort. That does not always mean we have done something wrong. Some things need to be said, just as some doors need to be opened.

The problem comes when we spend so much time trying not to disturb anyone that we stop expressing what we need. We keep quiet to preserve the peace, postpone a conversation, or agree to something that makes us uncomfortable. From the outside, everything seems calm, but inside, the same unresolved issue keeps making noise. Silence can be considerate, but it can also become a way of avoiding what needs attention.

Of course, not every moment requires a serious conversation. Sometimes people are tired, worried, or simply not ready to talk. Respecting that is part of living together, too. The important thing is to find a moment when both sides can listen, instead of letting a small disagreement grow because nobody wants to bring it up.

Perhaps communication is a little like maintaining a door. A few drops of oil can prevent that irritating squeak, but the door still has to be opened and closed. In the same way, a kind word, an honest explanation, or the willingness to listen can make a difficult change easier. They do not guarantee that nobody will feel hurt or uncomfortable, but they can reduce the friction.

I should really take care of that door. Until then, I will probably keep turning the handle with exaggerated care whenever I get up at night. But I also want to remember that, in a house shared with others, consideration matters, and so does being able to move freely. We can try not to make unnecessary noise without forcing ourselves to live as if every step were a disturbance.
