Good evening, blogging friends, how are you? I'm always busy with moving, but I still find time to read. Among some of my books (I have too many, I often buy them and forget about them) I found a thriller that I really enjoyed reading these evenings by Rebecca Fleet. I'll tell you a little about it. The plot unfolds over several years—the past, the present, and through multiple voices—that of the protagonist Caroline, her husband Francis, and a mysterious guest. The plot begins with Caroline booking a home exchange to take a couple's vacation with her husband, who has been going through a serious crisis. She then goes to a stranger's house, and the stranger goes to hers. From the beginning, the vacation doesn't seem to get off to a good start. She finds herself in a sterile yet disturbing apartment, especially because every corner hints at a mistake from her past, a betrayal that shook her marriage and her life. Meanwhile, the secret guest in her home seems to be developing feelings of deep hatred toward Caroline, in a monologue filled with resentment and anger. After each reference to her betrayal, the story shifts to the past. There's a perfect analysis of a marriage in crisis. In the past, her husband, Francis, had a bout of depression. They also have a son who seems to be the only glue holding them together during this period. Francis was increasingly gloomy, indisposed, withdrawn, and angry. For him, Caroline seemed to no longer exist, merely an annoying shadow urging him to get better and get help. Their relationship is hanging by a thread, filled with tension, resentment, and dissatisfaction—the perfect breeding ground for him to begin nurturing attraction to other people.

And so it happens to Caroline: a slow attraction develops between her and a colleague, growing daily. Caroline tries to stay home as little as possible, returning only for her son. Francis is increasingly indifferent, and Caroline gives in to the temptation of adultery. From then on, her life will be a mix of happiness, excitement, but also guilt and pain every time she opens the door. Then it takes shape in the present, with her and her husband on vacation in this house, where she finds clues everywhere that point to her past (a man's perfume, flowers, music...). And the vacation that was supposed to strengthen her marriage turns out to be a nightmare, a moment of emotional breakdown for her, which she can't reveal to her husband, who has barely forgiven her for the betrayal. She begins to wonder, "Why is he in her house now?" Is it perhaps her ex-lover, angry with her? Who is doing all this to her? It's a very interesting thriller that explores both the cracks that can form in a marriage and the relationship difficulties before and after an affair. Above all, there's a mysterious element: who is this guest who seems to want revenge on Caroline or drive her mad? How much will she be able to live with secrets and a past that wants to come back to ruin her marriage? I recommend it; it's a good read, written smoothly and clearly. Enjoy!
