Lisa Laffi, The Uncrowned Queen, a fictionalized story of Margaret of Habsburg. (ENG/ESP)
Good evening, blog friends, here I am again reviewing one of the latest novels I've read, written by Lisa Lagfi, an author who writes historical novels and is especially popular with those who love historical novels with female protagonists and a hint of romance. This novel is inspired by the life of Margaret of Habsburg, who was promised in marriage to the King of France at a very young age. She lives her young life waiting for this moment, ready to reign and fearless, until the future King of France chooses to marry the Princess of Brittany. Margaret feels betrayed and sad and returns to her native country, the beautiful Flanders, where she rediscovers places and people dear to her, and marvelous landscapes. But a woman of marriageable age cannot stay too long with her family, despite having left a piece of her heart in Flanders. She must return to Spain to a young artist named Conrad, who with his beauty and talent has managed to win her over with his charm. A wandering bride at the behest of her father Maximilian and her brother Philip. The only one who seems to always be by his side is his childhood best friend Filiberto di Savoia, as they spitefully call him "The king of a kingdom of rocks and goats".
Margarita faces a long and arduous journey by ship to Spain, leaving behind her loved ones, loves, and friends. But she finds comfort in her new husband, the King of Asturias, who turns out to be a respectable, sweet, and kind man. Margarita certainly isn't feeling love, but she feels fulfilled and at peace with her husband. Unfortunately, the King of Asturias is in poor health and will die young. Margarita finds herself alone again, without a kingdom, without a crown, at the mercy of political events and the choices of men, but someone from her past will perhaps be able to make her queen and even make her happy. This book is a historical novel with many fictionalized sections. There are many sections dedicated to love, which seems to be a central theme above political and historical facts. Margarita's character becomes human, no longer austere as the paintings suggest, but a girl, then a woman, battling against her destiny and fighting to freely love whoever she chooses, beyond politics. A pleasant and easy novel to read.
