Good morning, blog friends! I’m back to take you on another outing—this time, back to the countryside. Today, we’re venturing into the rural areas near Fucecchio—specifically the surrounding lands—while steering clear of the marshlands, which are difficult to visit in the summer. These areas are very peaceful due to their extreme isolation—typical of the rural zones in this region. The land was reclaimed around the early 20th century; prior to that, it was entirely marshland. Naturally, the challenging terrain had kept the area virtually uninhabited in the past, but the reclamation projects of the 1900s made the land more productive and, of course, habitable. Many farmers purchased plots here, establishing fields for cultivation and building farmhouses where they lived with their families. The land is suitable for farming, and over the years, the number of fields expanded enormously. Today, however, few farmers remain, as the work is no longer profitable and people prefer to work elsewhere; yet, the fields persist—some still under cultivation, others left fallow.

During our outing, we noticed that quite a few factories and warehouses have sprung up here; I believe industries from the town of Fucecchio keep their storage facilities here because there are many large concrete structures. It is indeed an ideal location for factories, as the lack of nearby houses means they don't disturb anyone with noise; I imagine the neighbors don't bother each other, given the fields and kilometers of distance separating them.

Hoy nos adentraremos en las zonas rurales cercanas a Fucecchio —específicamente en los terrenos circundantes—, evitando las áreas pantanosas, que resultan difíciles de visitar en verano. Estas zonas son muy tranquilas debido a su gran aislamiento, algo típico de las áreas rurales de esta región. Los terrenos fueron recuperados a principios del siglo XX; antes de eso, toda la zona era un pantano. Naturalmente, lo difícil del terreno había mantenido la zona prácticamente deshabitada en el pasado, pero los proyectos de recuperación de los años 1900 hicieron que la tierra fuera más productiva y, por supuesto, habitable. Muchos agricultores compraron parcelas aquí, estableciendo campos de cultivo y construyendo casas de labranza donde vivían con sus familias. La tierra es apta para la agricultura y, con el paso de los años, la superficie cultivada aumentó enormemente. Hoy en día, sin embargo, quedan pocos agricultores, ya que la actividad ha dejado de ser rentable y la gente prefiere trabajar en otros lugares; aun así, los campos permanecen: algunos siguen en cultivo, mientras que otros se han dejado en barbecho.

Durante nuestra salida, observamos que han surgido bastantes fábricas y almacenes por aquí; creo que las industrias de la localidad de Fucecchio mantienen aquí sus instalaciones de almacenamiento, ya que hay muchas grandes estructuras de hormigón. Es, de hecho, una ubicación ideal para fábricas, pues la ausencia de viviendas cercanas evita que molesten a nadie con el ruido; imagino que los vecinos no se molestan entre sí, dada la distancia de kilómetros y los campos que los separan.

Looking at the few houses here, you can immediately tell they belonged to old farmers; they are large, simple masonry structures featuring multiple rooms and barns—classic farmhouses—though many appear uninhabited nowadays. Being a rural area, wherever we looked we saw fields—nothing but fields! Some were lush and green, while others held simple crops. As we wandered around, however, we miraculously stumbled upon small clusters of homes—villas and smaller houses. Aside from the fields, there are also several power plants here; actually, it would be an ideal location for wind farms too, though those aren't very popular in Italy. In any case, these are truly pleasant, peaceful areas if you love the countryside—places where you can walk in tranquility, as very few cars pass by. I really love country scenery, and I was delighted with the rural tour my husband and I took; sometimes, living in the city, you just need to immerse yourself in nature.

Anyway, we’ve explored practically the entire surrounding countryside, and I think that from now on, we’ll go back to visiting the mountains; after all, there are so many beautiful mountains surrounding Pistoia and Lucca! Al observar las pocas casas que hay aquí, se nota de inmediato que pertenecían a antiguos agricultores; son estructuras grandes y sencillas de mampostería, con numerosas habitaciones y graneros —las típicas casas de labranza—, aunque muchas parecen estar deshabitadas hoy en día. Al tratarse de una zona rural, miráramos donde miráramos veíamos campos: ¡puros campos! Algunos lucían verdes y frondosos, mientras que otros albergaban cultivos más sencillos. Sin embargo, mientras recorríamos la zona, dimos casi por milagro con pequeños núcleos de viviendas: villas y casas más modestas. Además de los campos, aquí hay varias centrales eléctricas; de hecho, sería también un lugar ideal para parques eólicos, aunque estos no son muy comunes en Italia. En cualquier caso, son parajes realmente agradables y tranquilos para los amantes del campo; lugares donde pasear con calma, ya que apenas circulan coches. Me encantan los paisajes rurales y disfruté muchísimo de la excursión que hicimos mi marido y yo; a veces, viviendo en la ciudad, uno simplemente necesita sumergirse en la naturaleza.

En fin, hemos recorrido prácticamente toda la campiña de los alrededores y creo que, de ahora en adelante, volveremos a visitar las montañas; ¡al fin y al cabo, hay muchísimas montañas hermosas rodeando Pistoia y Lucca!
