A visit to Prataccio: an excursion to the cool mountain air./Una visita a Prataccio: una excursión al aire fresco de la montaña.
Good morning, blog friends! I’m back to take you to another village in the Pistoia mountains. The weather wasn't ideal, but after days of terrible, stifling heat, it was pleasant to breathe in some fresh air. Today we’re heading to Prataccio, a village located a couple of towns up from Prunetta—which I told you about a few days ago. Prataccio, however, has a different layout; it developed around the Rio Buio stream, which flows into the larger rivers of the Val di Lima. That’s another great area I hope to visit soon, as it’s full of beautiful spots, rivers, valleys, mountains, and a very famous dam. In any case, Prataccio is a village that sprang up along the road by the stream; what started as just a handful of houses gradually grew into a town with many small hamlets winding around the main settlement. There are plenty of side roads leading to hamlets like Africo, Aiale, and Prata. Even though the village is tiny, it’s very lively in the summer; the hamlets themselves organize street dinners—usually featuring game meat like venison and wild boar—since this is a well-known hunters' village. In fact, there is even a very well-stocked hunting shop there. I’m not exactly a fan of hunting as a sport, but I can’t deny that I love venison and wild boar meat.
Prataccio is surrounded by wild, lush woods and vast forests; one must be careful here, however, as the area is crisscrossed by many ravines—some of which can be dangerous. Indeed, when walking here, it is wise to be accompanied by locals who know the various woodland paths well—and, above all, know which ones are safe. The forests here are beautiful but very dense; perhaps this contributes to the area's cool climate, situated as it is at an altitude of around eight hundred meters. The houses are simple—some built of stone (the older ones) and others of more modest construction. It is a very quiet village yet well-equipped with amenities, including a bar and a butcher shop—though the latter was recently the scene of a tragic incident: a twenty-four-year-old man suffered a fatal medical emergency while working there, a source of great sorrow and pain for the entire community. I still have acquaintances living in Prataccio who speak highly of the place; they say it is wonderful in the summer, though winter can be difficult because snowplows often fail to get through—especially in the smaller hamlets and on steeper roads where the plows simply cannot pass. Like almost all the villages in the area, Prataccio has medieval origins; it began as a small community living off the woods and timber. Over the years, as the mountain area saw renewed settlement, many people built simple homes or charming cottages here. It is a truly simple, lovely village nestled in the mountains—a quiet, cool spot to spend pleasant moments escaping the city heat.
