Good morning, blog friends—how are you? I realized I hadn't told you about a wonderful family barbecue we had a few days ago. My husband's uncle invited us to his town for a family get-together because two of his sons were back: Maurizio, who lives in Canada and had returned to Italy for the holidays with his wife and daughter, and Simo, who is in the military and was home on leave for a few days. It had been a long time since we’d had a family gathering, so my husband and I accepted immediately. Unfortunately, not everyone could make it—many relatives were on vacation elsewhere—but some of my husband's aunts, uncles, and cousins were there; he really has a large family, typical of Southern Italy. For the occasion, we bought an excellent bottle of grappa and headed to his uncle's town—a delightful village nestled in the mountains that I’ll tell you about soon. Upon arrival, there were greetings, kisses, and hugs, and we finally met the Canadian cousin's wife. Sadly, she doesn't speak Italian, but fortunately, we managed to understand each other using my rusty French; I hadn't spoken French in years, so it was good to brush up, and I discovered it wasn't as bad as I thought. After the pleasantries, we all sat down while the men got busy at the grill.

We started chatting and catching up on the latest news—discussing the situation in Canada (so far away from us), our relatives and their ups and downs, and sharing a bit of gossip. Then we ate: we had an excellent mixed meat grill—chicken, pork, and beef—all of which was delicious, naturally accompanied by salad and some great local wine. We spent the day eating and drinking right into the evening; we even stayed for dinner, when my uncle cooked some wonderful paccheri pasta with garlic, oil, and chili pepper. We basically spent the whole day at the table eating, drinking, and chatting. By the end of the evening, we were all a bit tipsy—thanks to the wine and the homemade liqueurs my uncle had made—and we even sang old Italian classics and laughed a lot; it was great fun. It was a pleasure seeing my husband's relatives again; I get along very well with his family—they are all kind and friendly. It was truly a lovely day in a charming village with a beautiful view of the town. We really ought to have barbecues like this more often.
