What started like a promise has turned into a reality. Three years ago, some of our community elders met with the Lagos state government over our street road construction, and fortunately, they had the request accepted.
The day the government came to lunch, the project was very joyous. There were canopies everywhere with music and light refreshments for the whole community. We received the news with excitement, and we were also asked to cooperate with the engineers and other workers who will oversee the projects, as sometimes there will be road blockage for car and bike movements.
Initially, the project started with full force, and we were all happy, but after 5 months, it became an abandoned project. A flood came, and we suffered all through last year. It was not funny at all. Students missed school many times due to the flood in our community. This was a road that never had flood issues prior to the commencement of the project, but due to the state they abandoned the road with locked drainage and holes in between the streets, It became a tear in our flesh all through the rainy season of last year.
Fortunately, earlier this year, the project was remembered again with a different set of contractors. According to the story, the old contractors embezzled the money allocated for the project, did it half way and ran away. So it took time for the government to show us mercy again by approving another fund.
Today, our road is 97% done! Just some finishing touches here and there, and we are good to go.
It feels good to have an interlocked street. Everywhere looks neat, and that's the development we wanted a long time ago.
Early morning jogging has been activated in our street, and that's lovely to see. Both men and women now do morning exercise in our street on the interlock everywhere. Personally, I am getting ready to join the chorus once I buy my sport wears and shoes. 😀
