Eliseo Diego between exact fabulation and the magic of the everyday [Eng/Esp]
I am Cuban, and saying this implies carrying an immense archive of nostalgias, rhythms, a light so particular that it seems invented, but it also implies a deep pride for certain names that sustain us, among them, Eliseo Diego, that poet, narrator and essayist who taught us that the marvelous is not in faraway kingdoms, but in the dust on an old dresser or in the crack in a wall.
I have just finished a volume that brings together the best of his story collections: In the Dark Hands of Oblivion, Divertimentos, A Sampler of the World or Book of the Wonders of Bologna, and News from the Chimera, and it almost hurts that I did not discover him sooner because reading Eliseo Diego is attending a lesson in the anatomy of seeing.
The first book, In the Dark Hands of Oblivion, is perhaps the most intimate. Its author confessed that it was composed of three fragmented narratives around a central character who was... himself, and that honesty moves me. It is not a grandiloquent I, but an I that observes itself from memory as if it were someone else. There is a playful melancholy, as if oblivion were a hand that, when it tightens, reveals the exact shapes of what we thought lost. Reading those fragments was for me like rummaging through someone else's photo album and discovering that, somehow, they were mine too.
Then I moved on to Divertimentos and A Sampler of the World... and there I felt the agility of his fabulation. An object, a vignette from Bologna, a minor anecdote is enough for him. His prose has such a poetic register that sometimes you forget you are reading stories and believe you are inside a poem that has become generous and tells you a story.
But I do not forget News from the Chimera. That was a journey to another frequency. It brings together seemingly dissimilar stories, but all approach the fantastic with the same naturalness with which one approaches a window. The fantastic here does not shout; it whispers.
What I admire most is his verbal economy. There is not a single unnecessary word, and yet all the emotion fits. Each story seems like a clockwork mechanism where the poetic meshes with the narrative effortlessly. He is, simply, a master of fabulation.
And I, a Cuban woman, a late reader of this great man, can only feel that upon closing this book, my country has grown wider because on every page beats that island that is not only geography, but a way of seeing. Eliseo Diego teaches us to linger in the moment, to treat the everyday as if it were a brand new miracle.

VERSIรN EN ESPAรOL
