What I enjoy the most in my relationship with the towel is the moment I get to use it for the first time. And when I say first time, I don't mean first time because I bought it new. It's about that first moment when I get out of the shower and I know I'm going to use a clean, freshly washed, sun-dried towel.
And look, the truth is that I feel weird talking about my towel. But that must be because it's never been a topic of conversation in my life. We both just give each other what we deserve in a very automatic way. She gives me her skin and I give her mine, and in that moment when we melt our skins together, she receives my whole wet existence, in a rather obscene transference that by habit has lost all its transcendence.
My affections for the towel are visible. When it gets dirty I wash it with an acceptable amount of detergent. I have to say that here in Cuba we don't have many options to choose from, but if I could, I'm sure I would always use the same one, I like the smell of lavender, or citrus, and I would also usually put fabric softener in the laundry.
We have romantic moments, slight, fleeting, but they are there when I caress her, as I said at the beginning, if I just put her clean. I also smell it and breathe in all that aroma that the sun takes care of settling in its fibers, whatever the material it is made of.

Lo que más disfruto en mi relación con la toalla es el momento de estrenarla. Y cuando hablo de estreno no es estrenarla porque la compré nueva, no. Se trata de ese primer momento en que salgo de la ducha y sé que voy a usar una toalla limpia, recién lavada y secada al sol.
Y mira, la verdad es que me siento rara hablando de mi toalla. Pero debe ser porque nunca ha sido un tema de conversación en mi vida. Nos limitamos ambas a darnos lo que merecemos de una manera muy automática. Ella me da su piel y yo le doy la mía y en ese momento en que fundimos nuestras pieles la susodicha recibe toda mi existencia húmeda, en una transferencia bastante obscena, pero que por costumbre ha perdido toda su trascendencia.
Mis afectos por la toalla son visibles. Cuando se ensucia la lavo con una cantidad aceptable de detergente. Tengo que decir que aquí en Cuba no tenemos muchas opciones para elegir, pero si pudiera, estoy segura que siempre usaría el mismo, me gusta el olor a lavanda, o cítrico, y además le pondría habitualmente suavizante a la colada.
Tenemos momentos románticos, leves, fugaces, pero están ahí cuando la acaricio, como decía al principio, si la acabo de colocar limpia. También la huelo y respiro todo ese aroma que el sol se encarga de asentar en sus fibras, sea cual sea el material con el que esté hecha.

Que soy bastante poco exigente con las cosas que me rodean, por ejemplo, y me centro más en su utilidad que en su calidad. Espera, que hasta existe un día en nuestro calendario para conmemorar el de la Toalla; y todo fue porque a los fans del escritor y guionista inglés, Douglas Adams, se les ocurrió homenajearlo de esa manera. El autor de la serie de ficción y humor, “La guía del autoestopista galáctico”, asegura en esa obra que una toalla es el objeto de mayor utilidad que puede poseer un autoestopista interestelar.
