Several weeks ago, I began a series of reviews of survival films; among the films reviewed were: "Pretty Lethal," "They Will Kill You," and "Ready or Not 2: Here I Come"; all of these films were released this year and, in addition to being survival stories, incorporated elements of other genres—such as action, comedy, and horror—to make their narratives more compelling. The film that wraps up this series was released earlier this year and most directly embodies the characteristics mentioned above; I’m referring to “Send Help”, a film directed by Sam Raimi that tells the story of “Linda,” a capable and highly intelligent woman who, alongside her millionaire, arrogant, and misogynistic boss, must first survive on a deserted island and then endure the tension that arises between her and her only companion.

There was no doubt that the interest in Send Help stemmed from the film’s director; having Sam Raimi on board surely generated a lot of anticipation because this might have been another chance to see the director of “Evil Dead” return to a genre that has brought him great success. This time around, Raimi takes on the black comedy genre, proving very effective at creating a sense of unease in many scenes; this approach is particularly evident in the first act, which serves as a clear introduction to the protagonists and lays the groundwork for the story. Another important aspect—and one that’s once again closely tied to the comedy—is the physicality; this is a production where the interaction between the two main characters is highly confrontational. There’s a clear power dynamic between them, creating a competitive relationship based on the assertion of force, which makes it very entertaining. It’s worth noting that this is a low-budget film, but it’s very evident how Raimi squeezed every last dollar to create high-quality visuals.

The story surprised me; the screenplay, written by ** Damian Shannon** and Mark Swift—who began their careers as screenwriters on two films in the “Friday the 13th” franchise—delves deeply into the struggle between social classes and genders, telling a story that’s both hilarious and terrifying as the two main characters gradually lose their sanity the longer they stay on the island. I think both Shannon and Swift drew inspiration from films from the late ’80s and mid-’90s, such as “The War of the Roses” (1989) and “The Cable Guy”—both comedies featuring physical confrontations, with characters who lose all reason due to their obvious instability. In fact, this is one of the things I liked most about the movie—there are no heroes or victims, only opportunists.

As I said earlier, having a director like Raimi was more than enough to get my hopes up for this movie, but just as I was surprised by the script, I was equally surprised by Rachel McAdams’s standout performance as “Linda”; What a great performance! What a brilliant portrayal of her character, who at first struck me as unpleasant to watch—annoying, lacking humility, and somewhat sloppy in her personal hygiene—but at the same time extremely intelligent, hardworking, well-prepared, capable, and very strong. And I had that impression even before watching the entire second act and the film’s finale. The development of “Linda’s” story is a key aspect of the narrative, and McAdams’s performance makes her (in my opinion) one of the best characters I’ve seen this year. I won’t overlook the acting performance of Dylan O’Brien as the despicable new boss—a young billionaire who profits from the work of others but discovers certain qualities when he finds himself a survivor of a plane crash; that event surely causes his mind to completely break down, especially when he has to deal with someone who is also highly mentally unstable. Both actors are magnificent; their chemistry is palpable, and they both make this film work very well.

Send Help could perhaps be described more as a dark comedy than a horror movie; personally, I think what I appreciate most is that it’s grounded in survival, since that opened the door to other genres that made the story work really well—and, believe me, horror is present in many ways. And while it’s true that comedy is present, it doesn’t overshadow the fact that you’re trapped in a place, a victim of your own desires and your past life—which you’re willing to do anything to get back—and that causes your mind to completely lose its way, leading you into a downward spiral of bad deeds from which it may be difficult to escape. This movie is what can truly be considered a horror comedy; it’s very funny, entertaining, exceeded all my expectations, and is one of the best movies I’ve seen this year.
