It was a very rainy night and Tomás was finishing his 24-hour shift in the hospital emergency room, he was very tired and it was time for the other nurses to arrive to relieve him. After filling out the last report, the shift manager arrives indicating that the victims of a bus accident are on their way, so they need help for the next shift, so everyone must stay to be able to attend to the victims.
"To get some sleep while the new shift stays working and as the victims arrive we will ask them to come to the emergency," says the chief.
With little strength, Tomás puts his things back in the locker and goes to sleep on a stretcher in a room that was set up for the nurses to rest.
After a few hours, a colleague of his moves Tomás' shoulder to wake him up and says "in about 10 minutes you'll be going to the emergency room, here's another uniform for you to change into". Tomas is very sleepy and manages to say a subtle "okay" and with his eyes still half closed he sees the time and manages to see that he only slept a little more than 2 hours.
Without hesitation he goes to the shower and gets under the cold water to wake up. After the bath he began to feel extremely hungry.
He sits down at the dining room table, after pouring himself a large cup of coffee, resigned to the fact that this was his only source of energy to start his new shift, and at that moment a supervisor arrives with a box full of arepas, saying "Hi Tomás, it's your turn and mine too. I know you couldn't eat so I brought these arepas. They were prepared by my grandmother who has a food stand. She did me the favor of making them and bringing them. There is everything there, with ham, cheese, "catira, reina, peluda and dominoes". You grab it and we'll fix it later. See you later."
Tomas with some disbelief at his good luck, checks the box and picks up an arepa. It's a good size, with a good temperature and a filling that pops out of the arepa, just the way Tomás likes it.
Without thinking too much he takes the first bite and feels the delicious butter and crunchy dough, a juicy filling and just the right amount of salt. Each bite made Tomas feel his batteries recharged and a miraculous energy rushed through his body.
With the last bite, Tomas looked up and said: "Thank you very much, now I can handle everything that is to come". He washes his hands thoroughly and takes another cup of coffee.
A minute later a colleague arrives in the dining room, who also looks hungry and half asleep due to lack of rest. Tomas notices this and says "compa, there are some delicious arepas over there" and goes to the emergency room.
The colleague thinks, "it looks like he slept much more than two hours, I wish I could be like that". Then he takes an arepa and upon tasting it says "now I understand why he feels so replenished...".
