The C-word. No one wants to hear it come from their doctor's mouth and especially on Christmas eve. My dermatologist called today, he said that one of the biopsies came back as a squamous cell. He wanted to know if I could have surgery this coming Thursday, so guess what I will be doing next week?
This surgery must be pretty invasive, he asked he I had plans for New Year's eve, I said no. He said good because I will have a good size bandage.
I did a little reading on squamous cells and it said if caught early, there is a 95% survival rate but if it has spread internal to lymph nodes or beyond the skin, less than half of the people die within 5 years.
Now I have a sick feeling way down in the pit of my stomach. The WHAT-IFS are running wild in my head. I am also wondering if this is the cause of all of my other problems. Then I think wouldn't it have shown up on any of the tests that they ran on me? More questions than answers.
I am guessing that all of the other 6 spots that he biopsied are nothing, he did not say anything about them. A few years back, I had a spot taken off of the top of my right hand and it came back as a squamous cell but they did not do anything else with it. I am guessing that it was so small that when they took the biopsy, they got it all. Now I am worried once again, does that mean that this one was too big to get it all? I need to stop thinking....
