I have just spent the last 3 hours watching Marie Kondo and am feeling inspired.....
I don't know if it is just me but something inside me is always screaming if I could just work out better organization tactics my house would feel a little less chaotic.
As things begin accumulating and multiplying there comes a point for myself where all these things actually become emotionally heavy. Leaving me feeling inadequate and like I am failing at being able to maintain a household.
I find something sexy about the idea of opening a cupboard to find everything all neatly put away and organized. I have a dream!
I can keep my classroom perfectly organized and spotlessly clean without having to really lift a finger, so how the hell do I struggle so much at home with fewer people to keep all organized,
We are a large family of 7. We accumulate things very quickly. What one deems as trash another deems as treasure and my house ends up with piles of things that never really get used of valued and I have a sneaking suspicion my husband is a hoarder by his never-ending growing pile of items to be repaired.
When we first moved to Cambodia we came here and lived quite modestly and very minimally for the first 2 years. but slowly bit by bit we began filling up again and as my house begins to fill again and my family begins to pie things here and there I fear my home will soon resemble something like a recycle enter.
I decided I needed inspiration and turned to none other than Marie Kondo and watching back to back ep(because thats technically being productive right?
Marie Kondo is known for her insane tidying tips and abilities to transform households using her Marie Kondo method.
I have picked up a few things (no....not the clothing that is spewing down my hall) and already learned a few things like;
You don't need a new space and or new things to transform yours.
I tend we think that if I just had this or if I just had that everything would be better and easier. But in actual fact, the sole act of decluttering and making space is enough to create that new and fresh feel.
And I am guessing that pine bedside table won't look half bad when I take out all that junk stuffed inside of it.
Give everything a home and leave no item left homeless
If it is going to stay neat and organized you have to be determined and diligent in making sure everyone puts there shizz away.
I need to make it easy for everyone by ensuring everything has its own place and everyone knows where it belongs and after all, if we are only holding onto the objects that "spark joy" we should be appreciating the objects we do hold onto and put them back where they belong.
Sounds good in theory right?!?
The more I actually think about it this is where my household lacks the most. In my classroom setting everything is labeled and has a home...absolutely everything. This is something it is definitely going to work more on in our home.
It's gonna take some time, it's not going to happen overnight
I tend to feel like by the time I am making progress somewhere one of my darling children have destroyed whatever progress I had made in another area and slip back into my old ways.
But not anymore.
If I can stick to the process of eliminating the things that we pick up along the way we don't need and continue being diligent with the kids we will get there.....here's hoping!
But I love it! - We emotionally attach ourselves to stuff
I am just as guilty in doing this as anyone else in my house. Holding onto tokens and trinkets from the children and my students at school. Holding onto clothing and trinket that I have formed a sentimental attachment to.
Now comes the tricky part....that old matchbox car with the missing wheel means nothing to me but mean everything in the eyes of a little person and what emotional attachment they have formed to it.
I'm ready to negotiate but if it doesn't "spark joy" it is gone!
So now I have a somewhat vision of what I want to achieve I just need to find the motivation to begin.
Maybe I will pop on another few episodes to see what else I can learn in preparation for the battle tomorrow.
Wish me luck! If you never see me again I may be lost in a mountain of clothing.
