A wise man I know would always tell me that unless you plan on doing something continuously, don't start it at all. And today was one of those days when I go to understand just why he said that.
Earlier today a friend had come to pay me a visit, and when it was time for her to leave, she had asked me to escort her to the bus stop, and when I had refused because I didn't feel like it, she had gotten upset and left.
You see, over here, people tend to do this thing where they ask someone to maybe escort them to the bus stop. You walk with down there and then walk back home alone. I've never really been a fan of it, which is why I rarely ask anyone to do such things for me, but yeah, just like my friend, there are some people who take things like that seriously.
But you see, this isn't the first time this friend has visited, and every time she has paid me a visit, I would always walk her down to the bus stop. I did it the first time because I had to show her a shorter path to the bus stop, and then the second time because it was a bit late and I had decided that as a gentleman, walking with her down to the bus stop was the right thing to do.
But I had no intention of making it an everyday thing, which was why I had refused today. But you see, it turns out the damage had already been done, and something I had done out of care and trying to make her feel safe has all of a sudden turned into something that I must do, whether I want to or not.
So take it from me when I say that people tend to get used to certain things quickly, and unless you enjoy doing that stuff for them and don't mind doing it for as long as possible, it might be best for you not to start doing that stuff at all or just make sure they know it's a one-time thing.
