Good afternoon, Hive, good afternoon geekzone@geekzone.

Buenas tardes Hive, buenas tardes geekzone@geekzone.

Happy start to the week, everyone. Today was a quiet day. There was little work in the workshop, but more work on the new project we have started. It is about a drip irrigation system for coffee, a project that we will soon be presenting here. Today we will present the diagnosis and repair of an Infinix Smart 7 phone that does not turn on. The customer brings it in because it shut down, she tried to charge it, but it would not charge. In what follows, we will carry out our diagnostic protocol and subsequent repair.

DIAGNOSIS

DIAGNÓSTICO

1- Since the device does not turn on, we perform a visual inspection. At first glance, the display does not appear to be cracked; however, it is clearly visible that the charging port is completely destroyed. From experience, we know that we must inspect this component before inserting a USB cable into the phone. If we had made the mistake of inserting a cable, given the condition of that charging pin, it most likely would have been damaged. So, for now, we already know that this pin must be replaced, and this is our first observation.

2- Now we will open the phone. We are going to measure the battery voltage, but since we do not know which line it is, we open our CircuitBit tool and search for the charging and data diagram using the model.

3- With our multimeter set to DC voltage, we measure and get a reading of 2.58 V. The battery is quite discharged; at this voltage, the phone certainly will not turn on. Let us remember that it needs a minimum of 3.6 to 3.7 volts to turn on. In this case, it is unlikely that the device has a short circuit or a leakage, at least on the main lines, because if that were the case, the battery would be completely at 0 volts.

4- Next, we will perform a second measurement, this time using our power supply. To make sure there is no short circuit or leakage, we will solder a small wire to the battery positive terminal and another to any point that is ground, also known as GND on the phone. Then, with our power supply set between 3.8 and 4 V, and 2 amperes, we connect its two alligator clips according to the polarity to the wires we soldered to the phone and observe that there is no current consumption; the reading on the power supply shows 0 A. This confirms that the phone has no short circuit or leakage on any main line or in the first stage.

5- We will perform a second test with the power supply, and this one will be definitive in determining whether the phone failed to turn on because of low battery voltage or whether there is a second problem preventing it from turning on. Now we will press the power key, that is, the power button. Current consumption starts at 0.5 A, then 1.1, 1.2 A, until the phone turns on completely. We leave it running for about two minutes without any faults. It is unusual for a modern phone to turn on using only the negative and positive terminals, since many times, depending on the brand and model, they also need the battery ID and thermistor. But in those cases, even if the phone does not turn on, there will always be some current consumption when pressing the power button. In this case, due to the phone's power-on architecture, it is clear that these two lines are not essential for startup. So here is our final diagnosis. The phone is functional; the only thing that needs to be done is to replace the charging port, and that is it.

REPAIR

REPARACIÓN

1- As seen during the diagnostic process, our phone only needs a new charging port and will then be ready for the customer to use. This is something we have already seen on multiple occasions, only on other models. However, the procedure is quite similar. Since it is already open, we will disconnect the subboard and place it in our raised holder.

2- Now, with our hot air station set to 480 degrees, we apply heat to both sides of the port around the anchors, and in about 15 seconds the old port is desoldered.

3- Using the soldering iron set to around 350 degrees and the solder extractor, we clean the holes that were sealed with residual solder when removing the port.

4- Now, with the soldering iron, we touch up the solder joints on the 5 subboard pins where the new charging port pins will make contact. We position the new port, solder the 4 anchors, and once again touch up the 5 rear pins to achieve proper soldering between the charging port contacts and the subboard.

5- We take a measurement to see if we were successful. Using our multimeter, we measure at the left end of the FPC of the flex cable that connects the subboard to the main board, and that is it: we have 5.15 V there, which indicates that the voltage is now inside the board at the correct level.

6- Finally, we place the subboard in the phone, connect the flex cable to the FPC and, with our power supply still regulated but now set to 5.15 V, using it as a tester, we connect the USB cable and that is it: our phone has started charging with a current consumption above 0.4 A. The phone's screen also indicates that the charging process has started. Everything is ready to be delivered to the customer.

We emphasize that in step 4 of the diagnosis, we set the power supply between 3.8 and 4 V, while in this final step 5 of the repair, we set it to 5.15 V. The difference lies in the fact that in the first case, it was connected to the VBAT line for the phone's startup process, and this line operates precisely with a maximum of 4.2 V. However, in the second case, it was connected to VBUS, simulating a charger that delivers this voltage of 5.2 V, and we know that this line does operate at that voltage, at least along that first path up to the charging IC.

This brings us to the end of this post. It was not a complicated case, but whenever a phone shuts down, its owner is left wondering whether it can be repaired or not. We always strive to provide the best possible solution.
