I was wandering in the north of Iran, in a little town where the time seemed to flow slower than elsewhere. An old man was sitting tied to a place that probably was the local mosque, finishing his shopping, or, maybe, tired of the heat, taking a break to wait for someone. The scenery was so picturesque that I felt the need to take his portrait right away.

The setting, the colors, and the composition were all perfect. But what makes this picture special for me is the fact that the old man in the picture didn’t know that I was there, observing him. In my opinion, this is the most beautiful alibi for a photographer who wants to catch the subject of his shots off-guard, to tell the world about some unknown part of his life.

I think these pictures are beautiful because they somehow convey a melancholic feeling, typical of this region and this time of the year. The old man was unaware of my camera, and that makes all the difference. It makes us understand that the most interesting things in this world are not found in books or made-up stories but here, in the most unexpected places.
