A few days ago, I was at a friend's office , and our conversation somehow wandered onto his old business partner, who tried to scam him and successfully scammed many people else.
We were talking about this person's misfortunes in life, as he had stolen a considerable amount of money from a large number of people, yet it seems that his life is far from being happy, as nothing goes well for him.
I told him that, although I do not believe in a literal God, I do believe in something similar to Karma.
I think that any person who wrongs others cannot be genuinely happy or have a satisfactory life.
In my experience, many wealthy and successful people who have an abundance of money often have some internal or physical disease that prevents them from enjoying their life or enormous misfortunes that happened to them.
Then, I told him what Southeast Asian people say about Karma.
I compared it to a snowball that rolls down a slope and accumulates all the dirt and snow until it becomes an immense ball of ice that can destroy everything on its way.
Similarly, good Karma should roll down and accumulate, hitting you as an enormous surprise if you did something bad. Hence, you should not harm others, hoping that your Karma will roll down and hit someone hard, as instead, it will roll again and come to you as an even bigger surprise. In contrast, if you do good things to people, you should hope that your Karma snowball will roll away and come back to you in the far future, accompanied by multiple good things.
Maybe such Karma theory is better than Heaven and Hell. If people understood that all the evil things that they do roll down to them, the world would be a significantly better place. I think that if people realized that their actions always had some consequences, similar to the acceleration of an object moving down due to gravity, there would be significantly fewer criminals.
