I used to think karma was just a word people use when they are angry.
Like.
Karma will catch you.
Karma is a respecter of no one.
I used to laugh about it but now I don't laugh anymore because I have seen karma live. Not in movies but in my own life.
The first time I saw karma was in my school days in Akwa Ibom state, there was a guy in our class whose name was called Sir T.
Sir T was that guy who loved to shame people.
If you don't have correct English, he will laugh at you.
If your uniform is old, he will announce it.
If you don't know how to do something like to draw, or read well, he will make you feel small.
One day, we had a presentation.
I was nervous. My English scattered.
I said the data are instead of the data is or something like that. He laughed so loud, the whole class laughed. I wanted to disappear.
I went home that day and cried.
Real tears I mean.
I felt stupid.
Fast forward to a year later.
We met again at a job interview me and same Sir T. Big company in Abuja. He was wearing fine suit, still forming smart guy. I was quiet, matured now.
During the interview, the manager asked him a simple question like tell us about yourself.
Sir T started forming accent. Fake American accent. He said I have been... I have been...
He froze.
He forgot his rehearsed speech.
He stammered.
He sweated.
The manager said to him, relax, keep it simple, speak normal English.
Same guy who laughed at my English could not speak normal English when it mattered.
I didn't laugh.
I felt pity.
But inside me, I heard a voice, Karma's voice.
Karma doesn't make noise, it just watches.
What I have learned is this,
Karma is not a woman.
Karma is not a bitch.
Karma is a mirror.
It doesn't come with siren. It doesn't announce. It just waits and shows you what you did to others.
- You enjoy shaming people online, acting as judge, jury and executioner? Wait, one day you will post something and the same internet will judge you. Same energy.
- You borrow money and block the person? Wait, one day you will need help and everyone will be busy.
- You gossip about your friend's relationship? Wait, your own relationship will be gist in another group.
- You think because you know how to drive now you can look down on learners like me? Wait, one day your car will embarrass you in the middle of traffic.
I have seen it. I have also tasted it.
There was a time I was guilty of the same thing, I judged people quickly. I wrote about it before. I thought being educated meant being mature. I looked down on my village people because they didn't have degree. Then life humbled me. I went to the village and saw they live in peace and harmony more than us educated people. Maturity matters more than education. That was my own karma but life corrected me.
Now my take on karma.
Karma is a great bitch , yes because;
Karma doesn't forget. You may forget what you did to someone, but karma keeps the receipt.
Karma doesn't come immediately. That's why people think they have escaped. Karma waits till you have forgotten, then it serves breakfast.
Karma doesn't need your help. You don't need to revenge. Just live right and watch. The same people who scattered your groundnuts in the market like in my driving story will one day scatter theirs.
So what do I do now?
I try to live in a way that if karma comes looking for me, karma will bring me gifts, not blows.
I try not to laugh at people's weakness. Because I have many of them.
I try not to judge people online. Because I know how it feels to be judged.
I try to help my people when I can, like my village people who help each other build houses. Good karma is also a thing.
My final words.
If someone hurt you and you are angry, don't waste your energy cursing them. Just say Karma will handle itband go and live your life. Because life is for the living so live it well.
And if you are the one hurting people now remember, karma is a great bitch. Karma doesn't knock. Karma enters.
Live in a way that when karma comes, it will hugs you.
