For this week I was forced with accepting the challenge to sew a panel dress for my neighbor. These is one of the fabrics she has giving me long before Christmas to help her design but my busy schedule didn't give me a chance to design this for her as she wanted to use it for the festive celebration.
Being an understanding person she permitted me to go ahead with the sewing after the holidays were over.
It is my first time of making a panel dress and you need to see how nervous I was.
Part of the effort to improve on our swing skills is by accepting to do things we have never done before and getting to learn in the process so I didn't reject the idea of sewing a panel dress for her when she asked.
A fellow designer friend of mine sent me a YouTube link as a guide on how to go about this but the tutorial there seemed more complex than what I can follow hence I decided to try my discretion of what I have learnt in fashion school
I started with designing the pattern for the outfit using a plus size measurements. A shoulder dart bustier. After setting the patterns right I decided to cut the linings first
It is important that I cut the linings first to avoid any errors with cutting as the linings are cheaper than the fabric.
When I was satisfied with the outcome from the linings, I went ahead and cut the fabric.
After cutting we moved to stitching the fabric piece by piece before I then drew a simple sleeve pattern and cut out a straight and flair sleeve here.
The highlight of the cloth design was this lace trimmings that I then use to highlight the sleeves, the dart lines and the shoulder dart pattern of the clothes.
The zippers and sleeves were fixed last and here is the outcome of the dress. The eventual outcome of the dress is so pretty that I'm hoping that these will size my neighbor perfectly.
