We're already halfway through October and Halloween is just around the corner, so I couldn't miss the opportunity to illustrate the most iconic symbol of this season: a pumpkin. 🎃
Ya estamos a mitad de octubre y Halloween ya se acerca, así que no podía dejar pasar la oportunidad de ilustrar al símbolo más representativo de esta fecha: una calabaza. 🎃
For this pumpkin, I wanted to give it the most terrifying look possible: I gave it deep eyes, sharp teeth, a dominant expression, and a sinister smile.
A esta calabaza quise darle el toque más aterrador posible; le hice ojos profundos, dientes afilados, una expresión dominante y una sonrisa siniestra.
I used the style I've been practicing recently—cross-hatching. This style is widely used for this type of horror artwork because it really adds a very dark and moody touch to it.
Usé el estilo que vengo practicando desde hace poco: el entramado de líneas. Este estilo es bastante usado para hacer este tipo de ilustraciones de terror, porque la verdad le da un toque bastante oscuro a este tipo de arte.
As always, I started the drawing process by making a sketch. This time I didn't use a hard brush, but a soft one, giving it a less defined stroke; this allowed me to have better control when building up deeper shadows.
El proceso de dibujo lo inicié, como siempre, haciendo un boceto. Esta vez no usé un pincel duro, sino uno suave, de modo tal que diera un trazo no tan definido; esto me permitió tener un mejor control a la hora de profundizar las sombras.
Once the sketch was ready, I began laying down the lines: I started around the eyes, then moved on to the body of the pumpkin, and finally the mouth, teeth, and stem. For this stage, I used soft lines that I gradually built up, adding more overlapping cross-hatched strokes until reaching the desired dark value.
Una vez listo el boceto, comencé a trazar las líneas: empecé en los ojos y alrededores, luego en el cuerpo de la calabaza y al final la boca, dientes y el tallo. Para esto usé líneas suaves que luego fui profundizando poco a poco, agregando más líneas entrecruzadas, unas sobre otras, y así sucesivamente hasta darle el tono oscuro deseado.
As for the highlights, I tried to leave some areas with very few strokes; however, in a few spots I had to use the eraser or a white brush to clean up unwanted shadows.
En cuanto a las luces, traté de dejar algunos espacios con pocos trazos; sin embargo, en algunos lugares tuve que pasar el borrador o un pincel blanco para remover algunas sombras no deseadas.
Then I decided to add some subtle shadows and thin roots at the base of the pumpkin so the illustration wouldn't feel so empty.
Luego se me ocurrió hacer algunas sombras y raíces delgadas al pie de la calabaza, para que la ilustración no quedara tan vacía.

Here is the one with a solid white background.

To this one, I added a gray background with a rough paper texture.
