They have a somewhat similar look to dragonflies, but they are typically smaller, and their wings rest very close to their bodies on their sides. I find them sitting still a little more often at different times of day, whereas dragonflies can be very active and require more patience when waiting for one to land. This damselfly had a shiny metallic, almost liquid metal, look to its upper body, which is how I spotted it.
