Portfolio Update - 4/12/2018
I'm going to reiterate my statement from my previous update before I get going.
Before I dive in, I had a thought. Steemit is a large enough community that as a whole our knowledge of cryptocurrencies would be quite vast. However, individually we all have areas where we are lacking. I think there is some level of convergence of ideas that comes with a platform like this, but for the most part, we by and large don't know quite where everyone stands on portfolio based decisions. There are several reasons why some people might be skeptical about sharing their portfolio (in percentages, not dollar amounts). Perhaps they're worried they'll be criticized on some choices. Perhaps they feel there is some advantage to seeing how something plays out before others catch on (although, if you have money in something you probably want others to buy it too right?), but sometimes tremendous results come from collaboration. I'm starting to provide my portfolio to the community in hopes of promoting conversation about wise investment strategies and would encourage others to do the same. The more ideas are out there being discussed on this platform, the better equipped we all are to position ourselves for success. I'd love to see some others post their portfolio ideas and comment to discuss mine, just food for thought!
That being said, here we go! I've updated my portfolio and have a few thoughts to share regarding moves I've made. Below you can find some more information on what moves were made and why. In summation, I've been shuffling around a portion of my BTC/ETH/STEEM, that combined with price fluctuations has changed my percentages in each bringing STEEM into my 2nd largest holding for the time being. I've also bought into a little more Binance Coin, previously I mentioned that I had some trace amounts for trading fees, but I've now taken an actual position in the coin. I sold a lot of my Tron during it's recent spike against ETH, but I have bought back in now that it's dipped back down again. Bitcoin Private has performed poorly enough for me to remove it from the pie chart, I still hold the same amount in a wallet that I'll probably forget about for a while until it can get some momentum.
Crypto Investments Expanded
STEEM
I had a post about why the market was good for expanding your STEEM position a while back on 3/9/2018 here. We ultimately ended up falling a little bit lower than the price at that time, bringing us to lows that haven't been seen since 12/10/2017. Due to this and my confidence in STEEM, I expanded a little more into STEEM. As you can see from today's uptick, this panned out quite well for me. STEEM is up 35.82% in the last 24 hours as of the time of writing this article. Compare that to a 11.37% BTC uptick for reference. I will be heavily considering moving some of these gains back into BTC in the near future.
Monero (XMR)
I think it's important to have a privacy coin so any chance I get to expand my Monero position I'm likely to take. Monero has a very similar pattern to STEEM above where it went a little lower than the 3/12/2018 price of my previous post then took a 11.49% increase today (as of the time of writing this). The main difference is that there was a dip down to this same low on 02/06/2018, a rebound, and then a second bottom that we're just coming out of. Another thing to note is that Monero has fought back against Asics mining which keeps it arguably as one of the most decentralized coins.
New Holdings
ClearCoin
The ClearCoin ICO completed and CLR has started getting listed on exchanges. ClearCoin takes on the marketing/advertising space and has some serious potential as a project. Feel free to check out this article I wrote a few months ago for an @originalworks writing contest for more information on the project. Outside of a massive pump, I'll likely hold these tokens for a while and keep an eye on the project. However, if it does spike where my profits would be huge I could be tempted to sell. It's sitting a little below it's ICO price currently, but the whole market declined throughout the ICO and it's still fairly limited as far as exchanges so this is not entirely shocking.
Binance Coin
So, not technically a "new holding" but I've only ever had trace amounts so I'm counting it! After the big drops across the board in the latter half of January, Binance Coin has been resilient for the remainder of the bear market. I'm also noticing an ascending pattern of price bottoms over the last month. I will leave the TA to the experts but it seems that there is plenty of BNB support out there. In addition, I also like paying lower fees for transactions by using BNB for those fees on the exchange. The high support for BNB could be related to news of a decentralized Binance exchange.
Small Holdings - Not Shown
These holdings have become so minuscule that I did not include them on the pie chart, but I do have small holdings in these currencies.
Stellar Lumens (XLM)
I previously expressed interest in expanding this holding, I haven't gotten around to it yet. I still would like to, perhaps in my next update I'll have had a chance to expand!
AppCoins (APPC)
Got suckered in at $2.50 when it was on Binance but not on CoinMarketCap yet. Going to hold on to what I have in case there is a rally for APPC later.
ZClassic
Holding leftover ZClassic from BTCP fork in case the coin gets forked again or development re-inflates the price.
Bitcoin Private
This depreciated quite a bit since the fork and is down to a very small portion of my portfolio. I haven't sold any yet, I'm going to stash these coins and forget about them for a while.
ICO's
I believe extreme caution is warranted when investing in ICO's. I've found that @originalworks ICO writing competitions tend to cover very solid ICO's. I'd like to invest in more but my funds are limited. At this time, here's the two that I've gone out of my way to invest some money in that are not yet on an exchange.
Alttex
Alttex is a decentralized exchange, multi-currency wallet, and messenger/market all in one solution for mobile phones and app powered devices. The major appeal here is that it offers an easy all-in-one solution that you could actually show your non-crypto investing friends to show them an easy way to join us in the space. If one of the biggest hurdles for crypto is mainstream adoption, then Alttex has potential to blow up big time! Alttex has surprisingly not been selling as much in it's ICO as much as I had anticipated, it's now in an extra 3rd round with a 10% bonus ending on May 3rd, 2018. I have just now emailed the team for confirmation on what will happen to unsold tokens (hoping for a burn), I will update this article when I find out. Here's a link to a previous post I published with more information on this ICO. Also, check out this video about the ICO and their team.
On.Live
I jumped in on this one near the end of the ICO with a small investment. Unfortunately for any readers, this ICO is over. The tokens won't be tradeable until 5/11/2018, so I'll likely have a new portfolio update around that time with this token included. On.Live is primarily a video streaming service geared towards content creators and service providers. What I'm seeing in the market right now is a disdain for YouTube and limited other options. I love DTube in theory but I've noticed some issues with it so I like the idea of hedging my bets on the next huge video platform. Whatever inevitably replaces YouTube (unless they make huge changes) is going to be worth a ton of money so it's a good space to at least be looking. Here's a video from their team for more information.
Keepers
I won't go into depth on what I've kept from last time, but here's a Link to my first portfolio related post if you want to hear the logic behind these picks. I'm holding BTC and ETH for the same reasons many do. BTC being the main player in the entire space and ETH being utilized extensively for several other projects make them good holds at this time. I'm holding Nano and Cardano because I like the technical aspects of those projects. I also have Tron and Ripple for the potential breakout value they bring to the table.
