Bittensor (tao): 2,500 slots per subnet instead of 256, and what tao stakers need to know
Bittensor has implemented a significant change in the way subnets distribute rewards with the introduction of Runtime 475 on October 7, 2026. Owners can now choose between the existing Yuma Consensus and a new Null Consensus. Under Null, the validator with the largest stake determines weights without a voting process, increasing the number of slots available in a subnet from 256 to up to 2,500. This new mechanism simplifies the calculation process, as it bypasses complex consensus steps and reduces computational costs, catering better to large subnets.
For TAO token holders, rewards are distributed based on stake rather than on validator performance. Delegators continue to receive dividends even if their validator is not the largest. The article also details a new fee-free entry mechanism for miners, allowing them to register through proof of work instead of burning TAO tokens, thus shifting the entry barrier from capital to hardware dependencies. This allows new participants to join without the previous burn requirement.
