Portfolio Update - 3/12/2018
Before I dive in, I had a thought. Steemit is a large enough community that as a whole our knowledge of cryptocurrencies would be quite vast. However, individually we all have areas where we are lacking. I think there is some level of convergence of ideas that comes with a platform like this, but for the most part, we by and large don't know quite where everyone stands on portfolio based decisions. There are several reasons why some people might be skeptical about sharing their portfolio (in percentages, not dollar amounts). Perhaps they're worried they'll be criticized on some choices. Perhaps they feel there is some advantage to seeing how something plays out before others catch on (although, if you have money in something you probably want others to buy it too right?), but sometimes tremendous results come from collaboration. I'm starting to provide my portfolio to the community in hopes of promoting conversation about wise investment strategies and would encourage others to do the same. The more ideas are out there being discussed on this platform, the better equipped we all are to position ourselves for success. I'd love to see some others post their portfolio ideas and comment to discuss mine, just food for thought!
That being said, here we go! I've updated my portfolio and have a few thoughts to share regarding moves I've made. Below you can find some more information on what moves were made and why. In summation, I moved some of my BTC/ETH holdings into STEEM and Monero as well as entering the Bitcoin Private fork (via ZClassic) and grabbing some KuCoin Shares tokens.
Crypto Investments Expanded
STEEM
I did an entire post on this a few days ago that you can view here. In summation, we're back to early-mid December level pricing for STEEM and I don't think the underlying technology or applications built on top have declined in value since then. I fully expect the STEEM price to come back up nicely. I would check out some TA from experienced traders for a better look, but in the graph below you can see a simple view of how we've matched the price from 12/22/2017 if you look at the bottom of the wicks.
Monero (XMR)
Monero is one of my favorites right now. I was excited to see it take a dip because I was wanting to expand my holdings. I think it's important to have a privacy coin in your portfolio because there will always be a market need for this type of coin. Currently, if you want to actually use a privacy coin you'll likely find that other parties request Monero. Until it gets overtaken by a competitor in the privacy space I'm going to favor Monero.
New Holdings
KuCoin Shares (KCS)
I'm trying to make sure I'm diversified both in type of crypto and market size of crypto. I was missing a holding in an exchange so I decided to go with KuCoin. I like that you can get little bits of currencies based on trading volume and amount of coins you hold and overall I think the site/exchange has a lot of room for growth.
Bitcoin Private
I did participate in the ZClassic/Bitcoin fork into Bitcoin Private. I bought into ZClassic at an unfortunate price ($150 per ZCL... oops) so I'd be lying if I said the whole endeavor was profitable at this time. Luckily, I was very cautious going in and I didn't invest much so my losses aren't too huge all things considered. I'm not going to sell Bitcoin Private at this time, I'm going to give it some time to get established to re-evaluate my position here. For your amusement, here's a graphical representation of my pain.
Small Holdings - Not Shown
These holdings have become so minuscule that I did not include them on the pie chart, but I do have small holdings in these currencies.
Stellar Lumens (XLM)
To be frank, there's not much to report here. I have several coins I would rather invest in right now, but I also want to maintain some XLM holding in case of significant upward price movement. If I find that I lose confidence that this one will pump again, I'll drop my position. I do think it will have another pump though.
AppCoins (APPC)
I'm either a sucker bag holder, or just a crazy person, but I'm still holding my tokens. This is another bad trade I made but at this point I figure it doesn't have much room to go down further and has lots of room to move upwards. I do like the project, I got in because I thought the project was solid and I was on a bull market high. I'm holding because I still like the project and my ego doesn't want to admit I screwed up buying it early on at $2.50.
ZClassic
There's not much to report here, I kept my ZClassic through the fork to get Bitcoin Private because I didn't feel the sell price was worth dumping at. As I mentioned earlier, in the short term I played this all wrong and bought my ZClassic at too high of a price. For now, I'm just holding the small amount of ZClassic I have in case there ends up being talk of another fork to pump the token. It's not like ZClassic is a bad project, announcements of new development on the project would also likely cause the price to bump up enough to be worth holding a small amount for the time being.
Binance Coin
At this time, I only hold enough to cover the fees of trades on Binance.
ICO's
I believe extreme caution is warranted when investing in ICO's. I've found that @originalworks ICO writing competitions tend to cover very solid ICO's. I'd like to invest in more but my funds are limited. At this time, here's the two that I've gone out of my way to invest some money in. They're both still live and have not yet hit their hard cap.
ClearCoin
ClearCoin is a platform for buying and selling media content in the advertising space. Check out this article I wrote a while back for more details on this project. The ICO ends on March 31st, 2018 and has approximately 76% of it's hard cap filled currently.
Alttex
Alttex is a decentralized exchange, multi-currency wallet, and messenger/market all in one solution for mobile phones and app powered devices. The major appeal here is that it offers an easy all-in-one solution that you could actually show your non-crypto investing friends to show them an easy way to join us in the space. If one of the biggest hurdles for crypto is mainstream adoption, then Alttex has potential to blow up big time! Alttex is early in it's ICO process and has a 20% bonus active for 6 more days. Here's a link to a previous post I published with more information on this ICO.
Keepers
I won't go into depth on what I've kept from last time, but here's a Link to my last portfolio related post if you want to hear the logic behind these picks. I'm holding BTC and ETH for the same reasons many do. BTC being the main player in the entire space and ETH being utilized extensively for several other projects make them good holds at this time. I'm holding Nano and Cardano because I like the technical aspects of those projects. I also have Tron and Ripple for the potential breakout value they bring to the table.
