Today in Akwa Ibom, Environmental Sanitation Wahala 😅
As usual, today being the last Saturday of the month, it's Environmental Sanitation day here in Akwa Ibom State. That means no movement at all until 10am sharp. The whole state basically goes into lockdown mode, like it’s a mini curfew. Police officers and the sanitation task force are fully on ground, stationed in different areas, watching for defaulters like hawks. If you dare step out before 10am without a solid reason, just know say you fit spend the morning explaining yourself at the station or worse, sweeping the streets with a broken broom. 😂
This morning, I didn’t even stress. I just focused on my small apartment frontage swept the sand, arranged the flower pots, you know, the basic stuff. Not like I had much to clean, but it’s better to do something small than give them reason to embarrass me. Some of the shop owners nearby really took it seriously though. You could see them bringing out brooms, rakes, even those iron dustpans. One woman even brought out detergent and scrubbed her gutter like she was washing plates. Na wa o.
Funny thing is, last month some people were actually arrested for going out to jog. Imagine that someone wearing sportswear, just trying to stay fit, and next thing you know, they’re bundled into a task force van like they stole something. One guy was just walking down the road with his headphones on, vibing to music, only for the van to pull up like an action movie. They asked him where he was going. He said “just strolling,” and they replied, “you’ll stroll your way to Itam Police Station.” 😂 It was hilarious, but also a bit sad. Nobody was spared.
The worst part is, most of the people they pick up aren’t even the dirty ones. Some just no sabi time or forget it’s sanitation Saturday. Others just feel like the law doesn’t concern them. But once they jam that green and yellow task force truck, reality go humble them.
Honestly, I get why it’s done. The streets really need cleaning, and some areas be like abandoned refuse dumps. But sometimes the enforcement feels more like intimidation than motivation. Maybe if they added a little more community engagement like giving out gloves and cleaning tools instead of just shouting “where’s your broom?” people would take it more seriously.
Anyway, we move. By 10am, everywhere came back to life. Keke drivers hit the road like they were running a race. Shops started opening. Music started blasting from roadside speakers. And the morning chaos resumed like nothing happened.
But till then, lesson of the day: On sanitation Saturday, stay indoors, clean something anything even if it’s just your doorstep. Because those officers no dey smile.
