Good morning Steemians!
I like finding out the benificial medicinal uses of different herb plants.
Here are some about Thyme (Thymus Vulgaris).
There are at least fifty varieties of thyme, with the most useful two types for a herb garden are Garden Thyme and Lemon Thyme. A great lover for bee's as they will help with the fertilization of fruit trees and vegetable flowers.
It's aromatic leaves and antiseptic properties were used by the Ancient Egyptians in oil form for embalming. The Ancient Greeks and Romans used it to perfume baths and to purify rooms.
Thyme is very high in three powerful essential oils, borneol, geraniol and thymol. These are what give thyme it's antibacterial properties.
Medicinally, thyme was a treatment for coughs and digestive disorders. It can be used as a gargle so makes it great for the treatment of throat infections like tonsillitis. It makes a great mouthwash for mouth ulcers, and used as a tea to soothe a sore dry cough.
It's essential oil eases tense muscles and a sachet of dried thyme can induce sleep, which is great! I think i will try that over the weekend :-)
In French cuisine it is one of the prime ingredients of the bouquets garni and herbes de province, adding flavour to stews, soups, fish, meat and vegetable dishes.
