I have been wanting to ask you for a while, how do you dispose of waste? All kinds - food scraps and everything considered organic waste, then plastic, paper, and everything else... Oh my goodness, the amount of plastic we throw away, and we even try to buy fruits and vegetables at the market because in supermarkets, you can hardly buy anything unless it is wrapped in endless layers of plastic. Well, I am exaggerating, but yes, my husband and I realise that it is ridiculous to have so much plastic waste, and we are only two people in our family now.

De todo tipo: restos de comida y todo lo que se considera residuo orgánico, luego plástico, papel y todo lo demás... ¡Madre mía!, la cantidad de plástico que tiramos, e incluso intentamos comprar frutas y verduras en el mercado porque en los supermercados casi no se puede comprar nada que no esté envuelto en infinitas capas de plástico. Bueno, exagero, pero sí, mi marido y yo sabemos que es ridículo tener tantos residuos plásticos, y ahora solo somos dos en la familia.

A few weeks ago, the city where I live launched an information campaign about home and community composting, and as part of the initiative, the organisers (the city council in collaboration with the CREA Consortium) distributed these small brown home trash cans. The service is aimed at all users residing in the municipalities within the CREA Waste Consortium area who are interested in recycling organic matter through community composting. source

I think it is a good idea; we have to dispose of waste properly and do something good for the environment. What I didn't know was that I couldn't throw some things in the brown bin, which I had been doing until now. Yes, we have been sorting plastic, paper, and glass for many years, sorting everything separately at home and throwing it away in the appropriate containers. But the thing is that everything else, which didn't belong in any other category, was mistakenly placed in the brown bin, where only compostable organic matter should go.

The mistake comes from the other municipality where we lived until a few months ago, where even the mixed waste was deposited into the container labelled as organic waste. There, they made no distinction. On top of that, I saw more than once the street cleaning staff throwing plastic bottles into this bin, supposedly dedicated only to organic waste. It seems no one bothered to explain to the citizens the good habits of properly disposing of their trash. Thanks to this information campaign, I learned what I can separate for the compost and the rest (mixed waste) is going to the grey container.

Hace unas semanas, la ciudad donde vivo lanzó una campaña informativa sobre compostaje doméstico y comunitario. Como parte de la iniciativa, los organizadores (el ayuntamiento en colaboración con el Consorcio CREA) distribuyeron estos pequeños contenedores marrones. Me parece una buena idea; tenemos que depositar los residuos correctamente y contribuir al medio ambiente. Lo que no sabía es que no podía tirar algunas cosas al contenedor marrón, como lo había hecho hasta ahora. Sí, llevamos muchos años separando plástico, papel y vidrio, separando todo en casa y tirándolo a los contenedores correspondientes. Pero el problema es que todo lo demás, que no pertenecía a ninguna otra categoría, se depositó por error en el contenedor marrón, donde solo debe ir la materia orgánica compostable.

El error viene del otro municipio donde vivíamos hasta hace unos meses, donde incluso los residuos mixtos se depositaban en el contenedor marrón. Allí no hacían distinción. Además, vi más de una vez al personal de limpieza de calles tirar botellas de plástico en este contenedor, supuestamente dedicado solo a residuos orgánicos. Parece que nadie se molestó en explicar a los ciudadanos los hábitos adecuados para desechar la basura correctamente. Gracias a esta campaña informativa aprendí qué puedo separar para el compost y el resto (residuos mezclados) va al contenedor gris.

This is the amount of paper and cardboard waste we accumulate in a week, more or less. I like to store it in paper bags, reusing the ones we get from stores or, in this case, from the bakery. The amount of plastic waste we accumulate is, unfortunately, much higher. We have the paper and plastic waste in the storage room, by the kitchen, so we have it close. The brown bin for the organic waste and the grey one for the mixed waste are both in the kitchen. This means that now I have four different bins/bags/spots for waste. Oh, plus the glass. 😂

Esta es la cantidad de papel y cartón que acumulamos en una semana, más o menos. Me gusta guardarlos en bolsas de papel, reutilizando las que nos dejan en las tiendas o, en este caso, en la panadería. La cantidad de plástico que acumulamos es desafortunadamente mucho mayor. Tenemos el papel y el plástico en el trastero junto a la cocina, así que lo tenemos cerca. El contenedor marrón para la basura orgánica y el gris para la basura mixta están en la cocina. Esto significa que ahora tengo cuatro cubos de basura/bolsas/ diferentes para los residuos. Ah, y el vidrio. 😂

It is not difficult to learn how to separate waste and place it in the appropriate container. What's more, they come in different colours: organic waste goes in the brown container; mixed waste in the grey; paper and cardboard in the blue; plastic and metal containers in the yellow; and glass in the green. We, as individuals, can't force or expect everyone to do it right, but it doesn't mean we should do it wrong. The most I am afraid of (bothered with) is the amount of plastic waste...

No es difícil aprender a separar los residuos y depositarlos al contenedor correspondiente. Además, son de diferentes colores: los residuos orgánicos van al contenedor marrón, los mixtos al gris; el papel y el cartón al azul; los envases de plástico y metal al amarillo; y el vidrio al verde. Nosotros, como individuos, no podemos obligar ni esperar que todos lo hagan bien, pero eso no significa que nosotros mismos debamos hacerlo mal. Lo que más me preocupa es la cantidad de residuos plásticos...
