Just remember, the way Wall Street, Silicon Valley, your internet group, your university, your alumni, your country, your village, your industry culture, does things with its norms are almost always suboptimal.

It feels wrong to challenge routine and the community because the human brain is designed to default to security and so its systems stimulate our values in that direction. Its a default-settings rules-based algorithmic-procedure and not a conscious process. You have the illusion you chose your values in this instance. Your brain does that to you to keep you sane. The truth is you made no such choice, but hearing that hurts and so right now you can feel some adrenaline starting to pump. That is your brain again keeping you under control.

Reinforcing norms is a default-settings rules-based algorithmic-procedure and not a conscious process.

Here is anecdotal proof.

You keep telling yourself this is the day that you do that thing you said you were going to for a decade now, but you never do: and what is worse is you do not understand what in you is preventing it. You sincerely do want that change. Its your brain that is not optimized for your use case.

Things have a natural collectively reinforced inertia. You have to rip it in half sending everyone into confusion. Fret not for their emotional anxiety and pain. You, and they, will come around.
