During my NYSC days (National Youth Service Corps), I served as the president of a CDS group. So during one of our meetings, new corp members that are just newly posted came by, some of which were assigned to my group. And during that time too, I was still new; as a matter of fact, I was made the president of that group the first day I came in too, so I was still trying to find my feet amongst those who were there before me, those who were in the same set, and then these new ones.
One of the ladies that was assigned to my group, who from the beginning, was somehow distant from me. Well, I didn't think much about it then; I was thinking it's because she's still new or she's just that kind of person. Well, we later got close and became very good friends, and that was when she told me something I never expected.
She told me that when we first met, as a matter of fact, on her first day when she got assigned to my group, she thought I was the proud and unfriendly type. According to her, I acted somehow to her that day, and she felt bad. I was sorry about that. I apologized to her while telling her I don't even remember anything of such or me acting somehow, and then she added that I don't need to apologize and that she's glad we even got close. To her, if we didn't later get close and become friends, she would continue to believe and assume that I am the kind of person who's proud and unfriendly.
I laughed that day, though, even though it made me think. Likewise, I very well know myself and can't help but wonder how I came to give her that first impression. I guess maybe I was just too busy or handling too many things, as at the time she said I acted somehow to her; maybe I wasn't even paying attention. Even though I can be quiet and reserved too, I never thought anyone could interpret it as pride.
That day, I just apologize to her and told her it wasn't my intention, and that I'm even more glad that she now know me better now and I won't need to do much explanation. And that experience taught me a lot; a lot of times our first impression, the way we attend to or talk to people, matters a lot. I'm glad she was still around to know and see me for who I really am instead of judging me from that first impression, but there are times that that opportunity won't always be there. Some people won't see you a second time and talk less of having to know you. That first impression is what they will carry about and believe.
